The shocking truth about historic institutional child sexual abuse in Australia "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

A Childs Morning Prayer
Lord, I awake and see your light,
For You have kept me through the night,
To You I lift my hands and pray,
Keep me from sin throughout this day,
And if I die before it's done,
Save me through Jesus Christ, Your Son.

A Childs Night Prayer
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,

Make no mistake - Trump is placing all national economies in jeopardy once more "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

In the midst of The Great Depression (a decade long severe global economic downturn triggered by the 1929 Wall Street stock market crash) the U.S. Government enacted the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act which tightened banking and financial sector regulations.

At the urging of the same financial and banking sector in 1999 a bipartisan agreement saw the introduction of the Financial Services Modernization Act which repealed large parts of the Glass-Stegall Act and the Bank Holding Company Acts.

In the wake of another crisis generated by the American sub-prime mortgage melt-down, aptly titled The Global Financial Crisis, the U.S. Government in July 2010 enacted the DoddFrank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act to reimpose stricter regulations.

Now we hear that Donald Trump is moving to roll back the Dodd-Frank reforms. In particular the Volker Rule against banks using depositor funds for speculative bets on their own account and from acquiring or retaining ownership interests in, sponsoring, or having certain relationships with a hedge fund or private equity fund - practices thought to have exacerbated The Global Financial Crisis.

Rights or resilience? For many resilience has become a trap "IndyWatch Feed National"

There are gross inequalities and injustices, narratives of misery and disadvantage, where the narrative is ongoing because inalienable rights are not worked to or short-changed by governments and state institutions. Casino man arrested following police pursuit "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Police have charged a man after a pursuit in Casino on Thursday (February 9).

Officers spotted a wanted man in a silver Holden Commodore while patrolling West Street, Casino, at about 10.30pm.

When the driver failed to respond to police indications to stop, a pursuit ensued.

It was terminated due to the mans dangerous driving but, a short time later, police found the Commodore abandoned on Arthur Street.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in a house nearby and taken to Casino Police Station, where he was charged with not stopping during a police pursuit, car theft, unlicensed driving and resisting arrest.

The man was refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court on Friday (February 10).

Could a Tweet From an Unstable US President Send Australia to War With China? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Copyright Des Pensible 2017

This week in the Australian parliament Senator Ludlum of the Greens raised the question of whether a tweet from president Trump could send us into war with our biggest trading partner China.  While the question seems at first absurd and possibly even a satire, its not. Its a very serious question that deserves debate within Australia as it could have very severe consequences to not only our Australian economy but every Australians future.

The USA is in a very politically unstable position at the moment with many US citizens unhappy with some of the new presidents seemingly impulsive executive orders.  One such order is the banning Muslims from seven countries from entering the USA without asking advice from his government departments as to what sort of problems this might cause to US citizens traveling abroad or anyone travelling to the USA for  business or even a holiday.

This presidential order and tweets caused chaos at international airports and led to thousands of protesters at airports all over the USA. Even some of the international governments friendly to the USA criticised this action and some of the Muslim majority governments whose citizens were banned have reciprocated by banning US citizens. Fortunately for all the travelers affected, a US Federal Judge blocked the Presidents order until it could be examined in a court of law.

President Trump has also been co...

Firearms Inspections By Police in your Home. Your Rights. Their Authority. "IndyWatch Feed National"

I don't know about you, but my experience with police officers coming into my house for the purpose of inspecting my firearms & their safe keeping has been a mixed bag. First & foremost the police know very little to nothing at all about any firearms other than service issue. This can be a big problem & it has cost me money & time trying to prove the police wrong & me right!
Secondly the police come into my house thinking that I am guilty of breaking the law until proven innocent, this is blatantly obvious from their attitude towards me. They check out my house as best they can without going through cupboards & draws just looking for anything that may be used against me. NEVER leave a police officer alone in your house, they must be under observation at all times, & I recommend that you video their visit, especially when they are checking your safe keeping & your firearms. If you do not have a video camera, use a sound recorder. You do not have to hold this device in your hands so it is visible, you can set up the video camera or the recorder in the room where your gun safe is before the police arrive. Simply turn on before admitting them into your house.

W&J resist mining industry push to amend Native Title Act to secure Carmichael mine proposal "IndyWatch Feed National"

MEDIA RELEASE  12 February 2017

Traditional Owners resist industry push for amended Native Title Act to secure Carmichael mine proposal
Seek court order Monday to strike out Adanis fake land use agreement

Members of the Wangan and Jagalingou (W&J) Traditional Owners Council will on Monday ask the Federal Court to knock out Adanis claim that it has the consent of the W&J Traditional Owners for its proposed Carmichael mine, calling it is a sham agreement which Adani engineered through rent-a-crowds, dishonest tactics and attempts to exclude their voices.

The W&J Council say any attempt by the Federal government to do the bidding of Adani and the mining industry to engineer an amendment to Native Title laws, will be vigorously challenged by them and other Traditional Owner groups and supporters.

Spokesperson for W&J Traditional Owner Council, Mr. Adrian Burragubba, says, The document Adani is trying to pass off as an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with our people is illegitimate. We launched action last year to defeat this dodgy deal and  we are now taking decisive action in the Federal Court to have this fake agreement struck out. [Details of the legal action are set out below.]

We have already put evidence before the National Native Title Tribunal to prove that Adani does not have an agreement with the W&J Traditional Owners for its mine of mass destruction, which will destroy our ancestral homelands and waters, the cultural landscape and our heritage.

Adanis proposed land use agreement has always been a sham. Three times we have rejected any deal with the Indian mining conglomerate. Now Adani are on the back foot and have run crying to the Queensland Resources Council and the Federal Attorney General, asking them to do their bidding by pushing through an Adani amendment to the Native Title Act.

New chief of the Queensland Resources Council, former Federal Resources Minister Ian MacFarlane, boasted at a Townsville business breakfast last week that he has spoken to his good mates in Canberra about amending native title laws, in the wake of the Noongar decision in the Federal Court. This is just additional proof that the Turnbull government is in bed with the Indian billionaire Ga...

Policing In Australia By Consent for the last 200 years? News to me!!! "IndyWatch Feed National"

Policing by consent is about the general public consenting to allow the police to work in their communities within certain guidelines. IF a majority of the general public should at any time decide that what the police are doing is not wholly beneficial to the public, then they the public can demand that the police make changes. That is how I understand it. So why is the Australian public allowing the police to "step over this line" without any complaint?! Wake up people, the right & the power is yours to wield!

Policing By Consent.
To prevent crime and disorder, as an alternative to their repression by military force and severity of legal punishment.
To recognise always that the power of the police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect.
To recognise always that to secure and maintain the respect and approval of the public means also the securing of the willing co-operation of the public in the task of securing observance of laws.
To recognise always that the extent to which the co-operation of the public can be secured diminishes proportionately the necessity of the use of physical force and compulsion for achieving police objectives.
To seek and preserve public favour, not by pandering to public opinion; but by constantly demonstrating absolutely impartial service to law, in complete independence of policy, and without...

Khaled Sharrouf: Australia's anti-terrorism law strips first ISIS fighter of citizenship "IndyWatch Feed National"

Islamic State terrorist Khaled Sharrouf, whose little son shocked the world by holding up the severed head of a soldier in a picture, has become the first Australian to be stripped of citizenship under the country's anti-terrorism laws, a report says. A spokeswoman for Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton told AAP that a person had been stripped of their Australian citizenship, while declining to name the individual, but the Australian newspaper has identified him as 35-year-old dual-national Sharrouf. Under a 2015 law, Australia may strip dual nationals of their citizenship if they have carried out terrorist acts or been members of a banned organization. Sharrouf, the son of Lebanese immigrants, went to fight for Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria in 2013, a year after being released from prison for taking part in a terrorist plot. In 2014, horrifying photographs emerged on Twitter showing Sharrouf and his 7-year-old son holding up the chopped off heads of Syrian soldiers, with the caption "That's my boy!" In 2015, unconfirmed reports emerged claiming that Sharrouf had been killed in a drone strike in Mosul in northern Iraq, but he is still the subject of an active arrest warrant. Last year, Sharrouf's widow, Tara Nettleton, a mother-of-five who was living in Raqqa with four of her children and one grandchild, died in Syria, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Geoengineering Watch Global Alert News, February 11, 2017 "IndyWatch Feed National"
The relentless courage and dedication of the VAXXED group continues to expand the wave of vaccine danger awareness. More and more populations around the globe are going hungry, how is it that the grocery shelves in the US are always completely stocked? Where is all this food coming from? Dementia and Alzheimers mortality rates have gone exponential. The chemically engineered winter storms in the US continue in spite of record shattering high temperatures. The Arctic pushes 60 degrees above normal while being battered by a category 4 equivalant cyclone. Australia is suffering in a heat wave that experts have called horrifying. Locusts are devouring the food crops in Bolivias heartland, an official state of emergency has been declared. And there is Fukushima, every time it seems it cant get any worse, it does. Nearly 500 whales have beached themselves in New Zealand, is this heartbreaking tragedy the result of US/NATO/fossil fuel industry seismic activities in the region?
For many, the darker the horizon grows, the deeper their denial manifests. Each of us must struggle against such a tendency. We are not helpless, we are not without a voice, but we must choose to fully utilize it, no matter how ominous the gathering storm appears to be.

Australia in 'suspended reality' between rising China & hegemonic US "IndyWatch Feed National"

The suspended reality across the Pacific took hold as the Australian Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, conversed with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in a state of mild delusion. Assuming the air of a clairvoyant, Bishop insisted that she knew that the United States would not repudiate its own free trade agreement with Australia. Knowledge, however, soon changed to disbelief. "I can't believe it," she is reported to have said. "I don't take it credibly." Surely, the United States would not withdraw from the Australian-US free trade agreement, its own brainchild and inspiration. The trade balance favoured the US in any case. The paternal figure would eventually make sense, and step back from the precipice of madness. Observers should have immediately noted the perverse scenario. Australia had been shown up by the agreement to be distinctly outplayed and outdone in its trade with the US. (Some states simply have a freer regime than others.)

Fitch Ratings Inc: The Trump Administration Poses Risks to Global Sovereigns "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

According to the Australian Dept. Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) the United States ranks as Number 1 in the Top 20 countries with direct investment in Australia [ABS catalogue 5352.0, May 2016 & UNCTADstat database, October 2016].

In 2015 Australia direct investment in the U.S. was led by manufacturing, and the finance/insurance sectors and U.S. direct investment in Australia is led by the nonbank holding, mining, finance/ insurance companies, and manufacturing sectors. So international credit rating agency, Fitch Ratings Incs media release of 10 February 2017 may raise some concerns:

Fitch Ratings-London-10 February 2017: The Trump Administration represents a risk to international economic conditions and global sovereign credit fundamentals, Fitch Ratings says. US policy predictability has diminished, with established international communication channels and relationship norms being set aside and raising the prospect of sudden, unanticipated changes in US policies with potential global implications.

The primary risks to sovereign credits include the possibility of disruptive changes to trade relations, diminished international capital flows, limits on migration that affect remittances and confrontational exchanges between policymakers that contribute to heightened or prolonged currency and other financial market volatility. The materialisation of these risks would provide an unfavourable backdrop for economic growth, putting pressure on public finances that may have rating implicat...

The Noongar People of West Australia may just have saved the southern section of The Great Barrier Reef from degradation by the foreign-owned Adani Group "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

In the beginning

February 2016 statement:

We are a group of Noongar people from the South West region of Western Australia seeking funding to support our legal costs to oppose the 6 Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) settlements with the South West Land & Sea Council (SWALSC) and the State Government.

Our group was founded in December 2014 to oppose the 6 ILUA settlements and to campaign against the authorization meetings held from 31 January 2015 to 28 March 2015.

With an estimated 35,000 Noongar people in the south west region. We believe that the ILUA settlements discriminate against our people. The Noongar people are required to surrender all land in return for small pockets of land set aside under the deal. We are required to surrender our traditional ownership and native title rights, to have the power and civil right to negotiate for any royalties forthcoming. Through this ILUA, we are also required to surrender ('relinquish') all rights to challenge against 'negligence' under 'duty of care' within civil law legal obligations, any hurt, suffering and pain from the enactment of the native title act and all other acts.

The Noongar people and Non-Aboriginal people will have no say about land developments and the clearance of large areas of bushlands, thus preventing our say into any further destructions of 'natural resources' (food, fauna and habitat) for our native wildlife and surrounding environment within the South West lands. Additionally, to this we will have no say about corporate control via mining development entities and prevention of the devastating impact on the environment, they withhold. These are just a few of the 'unfair treatment' and blatant disregard of civil rights requirements of this ILUA settlement..

Queensland Galaxy Says Game On For PHON Balance Of Power "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Queensland Galaxy: Labor 31 LNP 33 PHON 23 Green 8 KAP 3 Other 2

A Queensland state poll by Galaxy, published in the Courier-Mail, tells a story that should have both major parties quite concerned.  If this poll is correct and typical, it is 1998 all over again and a bit more.  Perhaps the current One Nation polling bubble will burst before an election that is possibly still most of a year away.  If it doesn't, then a weakened minority government facing an unpopular opposition presents a dream scenario for Australia's number one nineties nostalgia party to break through at state level and obtain some serious power there.  Whether it would manage to remain remotely united this time if it did, nobody knows.

The high One Nation vote should be considered no surprise following polls showing the party at 16% in Western Australia, 16.3% in NSW and 9.4% in Victoria.  Queensland always was the party's strongest state.  It's possible even that the figure is an underestimate, but I am not that convinced that One Nation voters are all that shy anymore.

Sample size issues aside (and I haven't seen the sample size for this poll yet) there is one big reason to treat this poll with unusual caution.  It comes during a lousy news cycle for the government following the resignation of Transport Minister Stirling Hinchcliffe in response to a damning report on the failings of Queensland Rail.  I would expect that event to be deflating Labor's primary vote, and everything I say below should be taken with that caveat.

Other results of the poll show Annastacia Palaszczuk's lead as preferred premier over Tim Nicholls down from 46-28 to 39-27.  It can be inferred from this that the One Nation surge is producing an increasing neither-of-the-above reaction.  However, the Courier-Mail goes too far in taking the 34% uncommitted vote on the preferred-premier metric as "an unofficial vote for Senator Hanson as preferred premier" and the headline "Poll points to Pauline as people's pick" is silly.  A bedrock uncommitted figure of 15% was seen in the early days of Palaszczuk's premiership and Tim Nicholls is still a relatively unknown quantity as Opposition Leader.  Therefore to credit more than 15% to any One Nation figure - or even that much in my view - would not be justified.

Indeed, while the Courier-Mail claims Premier Palaszczuk's popularity has "nosedived", it is making the usual irritating mistake of confusing preferred leader scores with actual measures of leader popularity.  Palaszczuk's net satisfaction is down only from +5 (44-39) to +4 (41-37), a probably meaningless change, and the leader really struggling on that measure is Tim Nicholls, who is....

The Weekend Quiz February 11-12, 2017 answers and discussion "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Here are the answers with discussion for this Weekends Quiz. The information provided should help you work out why you missed a question or three! If you havent already done the Quiz from yesterday then have a go at it before you read the answers. I hope this helps you develop an understanding of modern monetary theory (MMT) and its application to macroeconomic thinking. Comments as usual welcome, especially if I have made an error.

Question 1:

National accounting rules dictate that a national government surplus equals a non-government deficit (and vice-versa). If a national government successfully achieves a fiscal surplus through an austerity program then the private domestic sector must be spending more than it is earning.

The answer is False.

The point is that the non-government sector is not equivalent to the private domestic sector and to fully assess what is going on we have to include the impact of the external sector.

This is a question about the sectoral balances the government fiscal balance, the external balance and the private domestic balance that have to always add to zero because they are derived as an accounting identity from the national accounts. The balances reflect the underlying economic behaviour in each sector which is interdependent given this is a macroeconomic system we are considering.

To refresh your memory the sectoral balances are derived as follows. The basic income-expenditure model in macroeconomics can be viewed in (at least) two ways: (a) from the perspective of the sources of spending; and (b) from the perspective of the uses of the income produced. Bringing these two perspectives (of the same thing) together generates the sectoral balances.

From the sources perspective we write:

GDP = C + I + G + (X M)

which says that total national income (GDP) is the sum of total final consumption spending (C), total private investment (I), total government spending (G) and net exports (X M).

Expression (1) tells us that total income in the economy per period will be exactly equal to total spending from all sources of expenditure.

We also have to acknowledge that financial balances of the sectors are impacted by net government taxes (T) which includes all taxes and transfer and interest payments (the latter are not counted independently in the expenditure Expression (1)).

Further, as noted above the trade account is only one aspect of the financial flows between the domestic economy and the external sector. we have to include net external income flows (FNI).

Adding in the net external income....

From New World Order To Hazy Global Disorder "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Donald Trump administration and the Brexit severance of ties between the United Kingdom and the European Union have, in a matter of a little over a half year, changed the world from a post-Cold War new world order based on American supremacy to a global disorder of altered alliances on a multipolar geo-political chessboard. In many respects, the new global disorder has also placed in jeopardy various post-World War II contrivances, including NATO, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Australia-New Zealand-United States (ANZUS) alliance.

This Dolphin Was Stolen From The Ocean And Forced To Live In A Filthy Tank "IndyWatch Feed National"

Credit: Australia for Dolphins

A dolphin has been trapped in a filthy tank for over two years after being stolen from the ocean and her family in an annual dolphin hunt. The dolphins name is Angel and she is currently being kept in captivity in a museum in Japan. The Taiji Whale Museum is known for keeping dolphins that have been caught in Taijis annual hunt and is just around the corner from the Cove where this takes place.

The dolphin, who is believed to be an albino dolphin, swims around with her eyes closed most of the time, which reports have suggested is due to the excessive amount of chlorine in her tank, according to a report by The Dodo. Visitors to the museum have even commented on the overpowering smell of chlorine as visitors walk through the buildings. Despite the amount of harmful chemicals being used, the tank is filthy, with photos and video footage showing Angel swimming around in brown, murky water with her eyes tightly shut.

Angel shares the tank with five other dolphins who were also snatched away from their mothers when they were young, during the dolphin hunt. Angel has gone from a life of freedom in the ocean with her mother, to one of cruelty in captivity where she has nothing to do all day but swim around in circles. The tank that Angel is kept in also has a plastic tube running through it which is a walkway for visitors to the museum. The tube, which allows visitors to walk through the tank, has made Angels home even smaller, with less space for her to move around in. In the wild, Angel may have swum around 100 kilometers (62 miles) each day, but now all she can do is swim in circles in the cramped tank, trying not to hit the edges and hurt herself.

Graham Henry, the campaign coordinator for Sea Shepherd said, Angel and the dolphins in the same tank are in some of the worst conditions Ive ever seen for captive dolphins. Young dolphins that are deemed pretty enough are captured during the annual hunt whilst the remaining dolphins that did not make the cut into captivity are killed for their meat. From there they can be sold for over $100,000. The young dolphins are already seriously troubled when they are br...

Trophy hunters overstate contribution of big game hunting to African economies: Report "IndyWatch Feed National"

A new report released by the Humane Society International (HSI) finds that trophy hunters are grossly overstating the economic benefits of big game hunting in Africa. HSI timed the release of the report to coincide with the start of Safari Club Internationals (SCI) annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 1. US-based SCI, one of the worlds largest trophy hunting advocacy organizations, released a report in 2015 that claimed trophy hunting-related tourism contributes $426 million annually to the economies of eight African countries and creates more than 53,400 full- and part-time jobs. But the HSI report, prepared by Melbourne, Australia-based consultancy Economists At Large, found that SCI had grossly overstated the contribution of big game hunting to eight African economies and that overall tourism in Africa dwarfs trophy hunting as a source of revenue, according to a statement. In the eight countries studied for both reports Botswana, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe tourism is responsible for 2.8 to 5.1 percent of GDP, according to the HSI report. Trophy hunting is responsible for less than $132 million not $426 million, as SCI's report claimed of the $17 billion spent on tourism in those countries every year, or just 0.78 percent of total tourism spending, the HSI reports author, economist Cameron Murray, adds. Thats an estimated 0.03 percent of GDP for those eight countries. In terms of the wider tourism economy, which relies heavily on wildlife resources, trophy hunting is relatively insignificant, Murray

The Guardian, 11 February 2017:

The founders of Mossack Fonseca, the law firm at the centre of the Panama Papers scandal, were arrested in Panama City on Thursday as the countrys attorney general launched a probe into their alleged connections with Brazils sprawling Lava Jato corruption scandal.

Juergen Mossack and his colleague Ramon Fonseca, a former adviser to Panamas president Juan Carlos Varela, were taken into custody and transferred to police cells in the capital overnight for further questioning on Friday, their defence attorney Elas Solano was quoted telling reporters.

Panamanian prosecutors raided the offices of Mossack Fonseca on Thursday. In a press conference on Kenia Porcell, Panamas attorney general, said she had information that identified Mossack Fonseca allegedly as a criminal organisation that is dedicated to hiding money assets from suspicious origins.

She said the firms Brazilian representative had allegedly been instructed to conceal documents and to remove evidence of illegal activities related to the Lava Jato case.

Put simply, the money comes from bribes, circulated via certain corporate entities to return bleached or washed to Panama, said Porcell. She explained charges had been formulated against four individuals, including the Mossack Fonseca partners.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increased the effects of hyperthermic chemosensitisation to carboplatin. "IndyWatch Feed National"

PMID:  Int J Hyperthermia. 2015 ;31(6):643-8. Epub 2015 Jul 9. PMID: 26156211 Abstract Title:  Efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with mild hyperthermia for improving the anti-tumour effects of carboplatin. Abstract:  PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) on the enhancement of hyperthermic chemosensitisation to carboplatin at mild temperatures in experimental tumours.METHODS: SCCVII carcinoma in C3H/He mice was used to assess tumour growth delay. The mice received intraperitoneal injections of carboplatin. For HBO treatment, the mice were exposed to HBO at 2.0 atmospheres of absolute oxygen for 60min. For mild hyperthermia (HT), treatment at 41.5C for 30min was performed. The tumour tissue pO2 levels were measured with a digital pO2 monitor during and immediately after treatment.RESULTS: The average time taken to reach a threefold relative tumour size was significantly longer after treatment with carboplatin combined with mild HT and HBO than after treatment with carboplatin and mild HT. The relative sizes of the tumours after the combined treatment were smallest when the treatment sequence was carboplatin, mild HT, and HBO. The tumour tissue pO2 values were significantly higher immediately after mild HT followed by HBO than immediately after HBO followed by mild HT. The tumour tissue pO2 levels during mild HT and HBO generally increased, although the patterns of the increases varied.CONCLUSION: The administration of HBO increased the effects of hyperthermic chemosensitisation to carboplatin at mild temperatures on experimental tumours, particularly when given in the sequence of carboplatin, mild HT, and HBO, a finding that supports previous clinical outcomes for a novel combined therapy using carboplatin plus HT and HBO.

China's 'One Belt One Road' is a New Geopolitical Paradigm "IndyWatch Feed National"

The ascension of Donald Trump to the US Presidency has introduced an additional element of uncertainty to the conduct of world affairs. Judging from Mr Trump's rhetoric, and some of his initial executive orders, such as withdrawing the US from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), the proverbial cat has been set among the geopolitical pigeons. The Australian government appears to have been completely unprepared for the Trump Presidency, and even less so by his decision to scrap American participation in the TPP. The political response has been one of denial, insisting that the TPP could proceed, and even more extraordinarily, suggesting that China and Indonesia could take the place of the departed Americans. This displays a degree of naivety that is a matter of concern. Even more concerning is that according to Opposition Trade spokesman Jason Clare following two FOI requests, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had not been asked to model alternative scenarios in the event the TPP fell over for whatever reason.

White House investigating source of leaks on Trump's phone calls with foreign leaders "IndyWatch Feed National"

Officials in the White House are looking into leaks about President Donald Trump's phone calls with foreign heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling them "very concerning." "We're looking into the situation, yes, and it's very concerning," White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Thursday as quoted by the Hill. Spicer stressed that the way parts of the information are being revealed "is clearly a breach of a lot of protocols and laws." The spokesperson noted that Trump is worried by the leaks, adding that "the idea that you can't have a conversation without that information getting out is concerning," Spicer said. He declined to elaborate on the nature of the investigation. Details of Trump's phone calls with Putin and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull have been leaked in recent days, alongside portions of the conversations with the heads of Mexico and France.

Tas Wilds Spur Sydney Oboe Concerto "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Media Release 10 Feb 2017

Sydney composer Nigel Westerway, perhaps best known for having written the score for the smash-hit film 'Babe', has composed an oboe concerto after visiting Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Westerway's concerto is to be premiered by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra this month. (see link to story below)

Bob Brown, who took Westerway on a flight and cruise on Bathurst Harbour (with Par Avion Wilderness Flights) last year, says Westerway's work fulfils a prophesy of iconic Tasmanian photographer Olegas Truchanas. In the early 1970s, opposing the impending flooding of Lake Pedder, Truchanas forecast these wilds could spur creativity like that of the Scandinavian composers Grieg and Sibelius.

"With partner Paul, I will be off the wild west coast of Tasmania on a yacht trip from Strahan to Stanley when this premiere takes place. It is simply wonderful that, not for the first time, Tasmania's wilderness is stimulating great creativity for people to enjoy in the crowded cities of the world," Brown said.

One Belt One Road a New Geopolitical Paradigm "IndyWatch Feed National"

5234324213123The ascension of Donald Trump to the US Presidency has introduced an additional element of uncertainty to the conduct of world affairs. Judging from Mr Trumps rhetoric, and some of his initial executive orders, such as withdrawing the US from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), the proverbial cat has been set among the geopolitical pigeons.

The TPP has consistently been presented as a trade agreement when manifestly that was not the case. Only 7 of its 29 chapters dealt with trade. Its underlying objectives, apart from benefiting the corporate world and reducing national sovereignty through such procedures as the investor state resolution procedures, was the maintenance of US hegemony in the Asia Pacific region.

The equivalent agreement for Europe, the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) was intended to fulfill the same function. It is significant that neither China nor Russia in the TPP and TTIP respectively were invited to participate in either scheme, although their geography, economic, military and political power makes their exclusion absurd, unless that exclusion is seen in a wider geopolitical context.

To understand that conceptual framework that led to the US led TPP and TTIP one has to go back to 1904. In that year, the Director of the London School of Economics, Sir Halford Mackinder gave a lengthy presentation to the Royal Geographical Society. In that seminal lecture Mackinder set out the framework of the future world.

At its centre was a unitary landmass that he described as the world island. The...

With temperatures over 40C in parts of Sydney, it is now officially the hottest summer in the city's 158 year recorded history with 10 summer days over 35C. At Sydney Airport, temperatures reached 42.9C at 2.30pm today, and broke the previous record for the area set in 1980. And the worst heat could be still to come. Tomorrow, for the first time in the history of Sydney grade cricket, all matches have been called off due to the extreme heatwave. Cricket Australia and NSW doctor John Orchard pushed strongly for the unprecedented step to be taken, and NSW Cricket has advised all associations to follow suit and cancel junior and senior matches. While residents have yet to be hit by power outages, locals in the inner west were given a short preview of what could occur if power shedding is necessary.

Song of Two Worlds: Alan Lightmans Poetic Ode to Science, the Unknown, and Our Search for Meaning, Illustrated by an 18-Year-Old Boy in India

You will not concede me philosophical poetry, Ada Lovelace the worlds first computer programmer, maverick daughter of the poet Lord Byron wrote to her mother, a mathematician bent on eradicating the fathers poetical influences on the girl. Young Lovelace exhorted: Invert the order! Will you give me poetical philosophy, poetical science?

Two centuries later, the physicist, novelist, and essayist Alan Lightman MITs only professor with dual appointment in the sciences and the humanities, and one of the most enchanting writers of our time furnished the world with a masterwork at the intersection of poetical philosophy and poetical science in an epic poem exploring lifes largest questions, some answerable and some not: questions about existence and nonexistence, free will, the nature of time and reality, the paradox of nothingness, and the human search for meaning amid an indifferent universe.

Song of Two Worlds was published in 2009 as a small, enormous book, the lyrical profundity of which rippled across the globe. Five years later, Lightman received a letter from Ajai Narendran, a teacher at the Srishti School of Art, Design, and Technology in Bangalore, India a longtime fan of Lightmans, who had assigned the verse book to the students in his Conceptual Science in Art and Design class. One of them an 18-year-old boy named Derek Dominic Dsouza, a gifted self-taught artist had been so inspired by Lightmans book that he created a series of pen-and-ink drawings in response to the verses.
