THE JIM CHALMERS FACTOR "IndyWatch Feed National"

WORK FOR THE DOLE IS AS ILLEGAL AS ROBODEBT

UNREAL! The Federal Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, apparently does not  know that Work-for-the-Dole has been unconstitutional since 1946.

The following text makes it very clear that Jim Chalmers, the Federal Treasurer, is not really the best person for the job:

Now I see today that Peter Dutton says that we should bring back Work for the Dole, which I suspect might have been whats prompted your question. Ah, I think it troubling that Peter Dutton doesnt know that Work for...

Kathleen Folbigg looking dazed, numb and gasping

J.G. Olsen / Financial Expositor

Its so intensely disgusting watching the strong turn on the weak, especially when it is done by a costumed gang masquerading as the legitimate, correct, good and the right. They have been destroying this individual, Kathleen Folbigg, for years and now they make a new ruling based on some rare genetic disorder which has turned up.

Everything now has to be genetic, because mRNA and mDNA is the new gravy train.

For those who missed the story, Folbiggs four babies died one after the other, so they put her in gaol. What did the doctors inject the deceased babies with, and why isnt that being considered? Instead, you can buy the book, Australias worst female serial killer. The title is based on the fact that the court has handed...

The coming war: If silences are not broken "IndyWatch Feed National"

Celebrated journalist and filmmaker John Pilger writes (Consortium News 1 May 2023), today the world is facing the threat of fascism once more, as it did more than half a century ago. Many journalists then recognised that they had an important job to do, and that was to alert people to the fact. The same responsibility exists today. If writers continue to not listen, and worse, take part in its promotion, they help to usher in a new world war.

In 1935, the Congress of American Writers was held in New York City, followed by another two years later. They called on the hundreds of poets, novelists, dramatists, critics, short story writers and journalists to discuss the rapid crumbling of capitalism and the beckoning of another war. They were electric events which, according to one account, were attended by 3,500 members of the public with more than a thousand turned away.

Arthur Miller, Myra Page, Lillian Hellman, Dashiell Hammett warned that fascism was rising, often disguised, and the responsibility lay with writers and journalists to speak out. Telegrams of support from Thomas Mann, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, C Day Lewis, Upton Sinclair and Albert Einstein were read out.

The journalist and novelist Martha Gellhorn spoke up for the homeless and unemployed, and all of us under the shadow of violent great power.

Martha, who became a close friend, told me later over her customary glass of Famous Grouse and soda:

The responsibility I felt as a journalist was immense. I had witnessed the injustices and suffering delivered by the Depression, and I knew, we all knew, what was coming if silences were not broken.

Her words echo across the silences today: they are silences filled with a consensus of propaganda that contaminates almost everything we read, see and hear. Let me give you one example:

On March 7, the two oldest newspapers in Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, published several pages on the looming threat of China. They colored the Pacific Ocean red. Chinese eyes were martial, on the march and menacing. The Yellow Peril was about to fall down as if by the weight of gravity.

No logical reason was given for an attack on Australia by China. A panel of experts presented no credible evidence: one of them is a former director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, a front for the Defense Department in Canberra, the Pentagon in Washington, the governments of Britain, Japan and Taiwan and the Wests war industry.

Beijing could strike within three years, they warned. We are not ready. Billions of dollars are to be spent on American nuclear submarines, but that, it seems, is not enough.Australias holiday from history is over: whatever that might mean.

There is no threat to Australia, none. The fara...

Andrews government must end the mass-imprisonment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: Victorian Attorney-General Symes to appear at Yoorrook "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Victorian Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes will today give evidence to the Yoorrook Justice Commission, the first formal truth-telling process into injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria, where she is expected to be questioned about the over imprisonment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Last week, despite calls from Aboriginal, human rights and community organisations to raise the age of criminal responsibility to at least 14 without exceptions, the Andrews government announced it will raise the age to only 12 by the end of 2024, and may consider raising it to 14 in 2027. The Yoorrook Justice Commission has previously recommended urgently raising the age to 14 in line with medical evidence and international standards.

In March, the Andrews Government announced limited changes to Victorias bail laws that will fall far short of the reforms called for by Aboriginal and community legal services and the family of Veronica Marie Nelson, a strong Gunditjmara, Dja Dja Wurrung, Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta woman who passed away in custody after being pushed into prison by unfair bail laws.

The Human Rights Law Centre today reiterated calls for the Andrews government to fully and properly implement critical reforms that would immediately reduce the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing injustice, harm and death at the hands of the criminal legal system.

Alongside broader transformational change, urgent action is needed from the Andrews government to:

  • Implement Poccum's Law, the blueprint for overhauling discriminatory bail laws which are resulting in unsentenced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people being locked up in pre-trial detention at alarming rates.

  • End the status quo of police investigating themselves and dodging accountability for misconduct, deaths in police custody and discriminatory policing.

  • Stop the pipeline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children into prisons by raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility from 10 to at least 14 years old, with no exceptions.

  • Implement OPCAT, the United Nations anti-torture protocol designed to prevent the abuse of people behind bars.

  • Properly resource self-determined alternatives to the criminal legal system that are being led by Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people, communities and organisations.

Amala Ramarathinam, Managing Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, said:

Coinbase And Ripple CLOs Meet, Will XRP Listing Follow? "IndyWatch Feed National"

A new tweet by Coinbase Chief Legal Officer (CLO) Paul Grewal has sparked interest and speculations in the crypto community. The CLO expressed his appreciation to Ripples General Counsel, Stuart Alderoty, for their meeting, stating they needed to meet more often.

In response, Stuart Alderoty thanked him for chatting with their legal team. After the tweet, two top lawyers in the community supported the strategic meeting, and some others called on Coinbase to relist XRP on its marketplace.

Ripple And Coinbase OfficlainsLeading The Battle, Deaton

One of the notable reactions to the meeting between Ripple and Coinbase CLOs came from CryptoLaw founder John Deaton.

Deaton is the attorney representing thousands of XRP holders. His response to the tweet was that the picture shows two valiant General Counsels leading the front line in battle. Further, Deaton wrote that he tipped his cap to Alderoty and Grewal to express his respect.

By saying frontline in battle, Attorney Deaton reiterates his position that the crypto industry is battling with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Notably, the attorney shared a tweet to that effect in March, calling every stakeholder in the industry to meet and share strategic ideas to win the war.

Following the recent tweet, the two firms battling SECs lawsuit may have listened to Deatons suggestion.

Another prominent figure that responded to the recent development was the Australian-based lawyer Bill Morgan. The lawyer stated that teamwork against a common foe is the best strategy to win.

However, Morgan further said he doesnt regard Coinbase as a friend of XRP holders as it ceased secondary market trading in its exchange.

Crypto Users Call For XRP Relisting

Other responses following the recent tweet were calls for Coinbase to relist XRP. A Twitter user going by Jon Mann, who responded, asked Coinbase to relist XRP, stating that the meeting is the tag team the Ripple community has been waiting to see.

Why Isnt the Democratic World a World? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Alain Badiou is undoubtedly among the greatest of living philosophers; one that may fairly be credited with rescuing philosophy from academic irrelevance, and the twin enemies of scientism and historicism. For Badiou, philosophy does not merely interpret the world (as Marx famously asserted in his Theses on Feuerbach). For an interpretation of the world, we would do better to look to myths, religions, and the various wisdom schools. Philosophy, presupposing mathematics, is a fundamentally rational and conceptual rather than hermeneutic undertaking, aimed at answering the question: does there exist anything with a universal value, and if so, how is this possible? Badiou secured his place in the philosophical pantheon with three massive tomes, which together provide a rigorous account of Truths, or the production in time and space of things to which we may ascribe universal value: Being and Event (1988), Logics of Worlds (2006), and The Immanence of Truths (2018).

Images of the Present Time (Columbia University Press, 2023) contains a series of three seminars delivered between 2001 and 2004. The first section presents a sustained philosophical analysis of contemporary nihilism and is initially taken up with the question of identifying the emblem, that is, the master signifier of the present time and Badious claim is that democracy is that emblem, a political system that does not prohibit or restrain, or not excessively. This raises the question of how democracy is correlated with freedom: given that fewer and fewer things are prohibited, what does that say for freedom under this regime? Ultimately, not so much: as Descartes already knew, indiscriminate freedom, or the freedom to do whatever you want, is at best the lowest degree of freedom. Thinking youre a free Subject just because whatever you want to do or say is not prohibited is sheer nonsense. It is true, for example, that almost nothing is prohibited in public speech, yet that does not mean that something significant has been publicly pronounced if nothing is prohibited and yet nothing, properly speaking, has been said, freedom does not exist.

Badious central thesis is that, at the present time, there is no world in fact, there is no present, strictly speaking. Why isnt the democratic world a world? In brief, because it is a world in which everyt...

Who Stole the 2020 Presidential Election? Antony Blinken and others have much to answer for "IndyWatch Feed National"

The corruption engaged in by the Democratic Party leadership appears to be never-ending and no one is ever held accountable. A recent report described how Michael Morell, the former acting Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director, colluded with Antony Blinken, who was then a senior official in the 2020 Joe Biden presidential campaign, to prepare and find signatories to a letter to discredit those seeking to exploit the emerging Hunter Biden laptop scandal, which was threatening to do real damage to the Biden electoral prospects. Following in the footsteps of the Hillary Clinton 2016 campaign, which sought to use fabricated information from the Steele dossier to smear Donald Trump and some of his advisors, Blinken suggested that Morell promote the argument that the laptop story involved Russia and should be dismissed as little more than a disinformation operation ordered by President Vladimir Putin. At the time, there was no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Russia had had...

Scandal in Tasmania: The Edifice Sports Complex Runs Amok "IndyWatch Feed National"

Profligate, a betrayal of public service, a misspending of state goods, a fiscal barbarism. By any estimation, recent efforts regarding sport in the small Australian state of Tasmania, unmoored from the mainland, distant, and, in many ways, depressed, has become the unexpected centre of a debate: Why on earth should the public purse at both State and Federal level fork out hundreds of millions in dollar currency for a stadium for Australian Footballs newest recruit? There are, lets face it, other handy alternatives.

Historically, Australian sport has been bosom-tied to corrupt administrative and state management. Administrators of the myriad sporting codes are typically conceited in assuming they provide a service for an increasingly obese populace. The sports personalities turn up and play; spectators turn up in their colours, pies and beers; the sporting hierarchs can then claim they are doing society a service. The logical equation that follows from this is revenue raising for the facilities as long as the sporting body is not the one doing it.

What is being proposed in Tasmania, a state suffering from chronic homelessness, chronic indigence and desperation on the health front, is a carbuncle stadium on a waterfront at Macquarie Point, a project that promises to cost $715 million. Those attending it will not be doing so for an aesthetic appreciation of the view: they will be in the enclosed stadium itself, watching the gladiatorial performance. All of this is deemed necessary for Tasmanias imminent welcome into the fold of the Australian Football League (AFL).

The jaundiced view from the Tasmanian Liberal government, led by Premier Jeremy Rockliff, is that having a spanking new stadium to accommodate a spanking new team at Macquarie Point is just the ticket. The suggested price tag of contribution from his government: $375 million.

In an exercise of indulgent and shameless deception, Rockliff, as the AFLs Manchurian Candidate, has dressed the entire enterprise up as an urban renewable project like no other that has ever been seen here in Tasmania. Entertainment, he dreams, will be coupled with the unlocking of potential, where we can build a world-class multipurpose entertainment and sporting where all Tasmanians can enjoy.

From the Commonwealth, $240 million is promised in what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is calling an exciting project, in addition to $65 million towards upgrading the UTAS Stadium in Launceston. Albanese has been busy fluffing up matters by claiming that this whole act of profligacy had less to do with football than a grand exercise in social redevelopment, an exercise of structural oxygenation that will produce (no modelling, evidence or otherwise is supplied) 4,200 jobs.

Attempts have been ma....

Bitcoin Doesnt Care About Progressives, But You Should "IndyWatch Feed National"

Bitcoin adoption is inevitable in the long run, but putting political division aside and building a broad coalition will shorten that path.

This is an opinion editorial by Jason Maier, a teacher and author of A Progressives Case For Bitcoin. Disclaimer: This book was published by Bitcoin Magazine.

Does Bitcoin need progressives?

The simple answer to this question is no, Bitcoin doesnt need progressives. We can all quote the memes by heart: Bitcoin doesnt care. Tick tock, next block. Bitcoin is inevitable. Bitcoin cant be regulated. I believe each of these mottos are true, in their own ways, in the long term. But recently, I have devoted a lot of energy to answering the converse of this question, namely: Do progressives need Bitcoin?

My book answers this more intricate question thoroughly in the affirmative. And while its easy to conclude, with confidence, that Bitcoin doesnt need progressives, it might be interesting to consider why you should care at all that Im on a mission to orange pill as many progressive liberals as I can. Its true that Bitcoin doesnt care. But I think you should.

Shortening The Long Run

As clear as it is to me that Bitcoin will ultimately succeed, it is also clear that the support of liberals and those on the left of the political spectrum, while not an absolute necessity, is important nonetheless. Even if Bitcoin is inevitable in the long run, there is an awful lot of time between now and the end of that long run. That time can be filled with growing adoption, innovation and promoting freedom money across the planet. Or that time can be filled with political fighting at every level of every government across the globe. Plenty of people reading this may not care, or they may even welcome the fighting. But in the long run, Ill be dead and the world would be a better place if more people understood and used Satoshi Nakamotos innovation before my stack of corn gets passed along to my children.

There are Bitcoiners who do not align with me politically, but nonetheless support my work. These folks like to remind me that Bitcoin is money for enemies. This is not only true, but actually an important property of all good money. Furthermore, it is also critical to remember that, in this narrow sense, no Bitcoiner is your enemy, regardless of how they align themselves within the lega...

The Hidden Lessons of Catastrophic Tree Loss "IndyWatch Feed National"

A shady stretch of sidewalk. (Source: Author.)

The thing I love most about my neighborhood (aside from the people, of course) is also the most fragile.

When I first moved here, I had no idea that fully half of the stunning street trees would be gone within 10 years. I did not picture my future self lingering over old Google Streetview captures, longing for the days where there was a massive, mature tree in front of every home, and wistfully remembering a time when you could walk the full length of the block in a rainstorm and barely get wet.

Those days are gone, and that lush and endless canopy is just a bittersweet memory now. The reason for all that devastation? Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

Because virtually all the trees in my neighborhood were elms, when DED arrived on the scene, they were all under threat. But it could just as easily be the trees where you live, succumbing to emerald ash borer, oak wilt or laurel wilt, chestnut blight, or the Asian longhorn beetle.

What all these insects and pathogens have in common is their ability to devastate tree populations in short order. Sometimes trees slowly decline and eventually die, others succumb quickly and become unstable and hazardous. Death is a natural part of the life cycle of all living things. So why are these particular threats so dangerous?

The answer is that in towns and cities across North America, urban forests are often made up primarily of just one or two tree species. These are called monocultures. And when you have a huge population of one type of tree, a single disease spreads rapidly and can wipe out thousands of trees in short order.

MPs, Scientists Raise Alarm Over Climate Hype for Small Modular Reactors "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

The Energy Mix, May 2, 2023. Primary Author: Christopher Bonasia @CBonasia_

Several Members of Parliament and activists are warning the Canadian government that its support for nuclear energy projects could prove costly and ineffectiveeven as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau maintains that nuclear is on the table for achieving the countrys climate goals.

The federal government considers nuclear energyincluding small modular reactors (SMRs) that are touted as easier to build and run than traditional nuclear plantsas key to meeting energy needs while aiming for net-zero by 2050.

..But on April 25, anti-nuclear activists and a cross-partisan group of MPs held a media conference on Parliament Hill, urging Ottawa to rethink its stance on nuclear and calling the energy source a dangerous distraction from climate action, reported CBC News.

Speakers in the group said Trudeau and his cabinet are getting bad advice about nuclear energy.

The nuclear industry, led by the United States and the United Kingdom, has been lobbying and advertising heavily in Canada, trying to convince us that new SMR designs will somehow address the climate crisis, said Prof. Susan ODonnell, a member of the Coalition for Responsible Energy Development in New Brunswick (CRED-NB). The reality, she added, is that SMRs will produce toxic radioactive waste and could lead to serious accidents while turning some communities into nuclear waste dumps.

Moreover, there is no guarantee these nuclear experiments will ever generate electricity safely and affordably, ODonnell said, since SMRs are still relatively untested.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May called government funding for nuclear projects a fraud.

It has no part in fighting the climate emergency, May said. In fact, it takes valuable dollars away from things that we know work, that can be implemented immediately, in favour of untested and dangerous technologies that will not be able to generate a single kilowatt of electricity for a decade or more.

Liberal MP Jenica Atwin, New Democrat Alexandre Boulerice, and Bloc Qubecois MP Mario Simard also attended the media event, the National Post reports. Atwin, who was first elected as a Green in 2019 before crossing the floor, is the only Liberal to publicly break ranks so far, but said she has had conversations with colleagues...

Fixed Versus Variable Rate Home Loans "IndyWatch Feed National"

Whether youre looking to become a homeowner for the first time or looking to invest in another property, it helps to have a solid understanding of home loan interest rates.

One of the main concepts that you need to grasp is the difference between fixed and variable-rate home loans. Depending on your financial goals and economic outlook, one type of interest rate might be more beneficial to you than the other.

In this article, were going to look at what fixed and variable rates mean. To help you decide which one is right for you, well also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both options.

Fixed Rate Loans

As the name suggests, this loan is where the interest rate remains fixed for a specific period of time. For example, you might get a loan where your interest rate is fixed at 3% for five years.

Once the term expires, your loan will generally move onto the standard rate unless youre able to re-fix your home loan.

  • Advantages
One of the main advantages of a fixed rate is the certainty that you get around your expenses. During the fixed term, your monthly payments on your home will stay the same regardless of changes in monetary policy.

With this certainty, you will be able to automate your repayments and set yourself short to medium-term financial goals in terms of your home finances. This will also allow you to budget more effectively for other expenses.Additionally, a fixed rate will protect you from rate rises caused by external economic factors. If youre able to fix at a low rate, you can save a significant amount of money during rate hikes.

  • Disadvantages
Just as fixed rates protect you from rate hikes, they also prevent you from benefiting from rate reductions. As such, if the interest rate drops, you could find yourself paying more on your fixed-rate monthly payments than you would have been on a variable-rate home loan. Additionally, fixed-rate loans typically have penalties for additional repayments or overpayments. This means you wont be able to pay off your loans faster even if you have the funds for it.

Another thing to consider is the revert rate. When your fixed rate expires, its possible that your loan will revert to a high variable rate. This could increase your monthly payments significantly.

Because of this, its important to know what kind of rate your home loan will revert to once your fixed term expires.

JUST IN: Ivermectin ban lifted, Australia Dystopian Down Under "IndyWatch Feed National"

The ban on off-label prescribing of the anti-viral drug has been in place for over 18 months

By Rebekah Barnett |  Dystopian Down Under | May 3, 2023

Doctors will be free to prescribe ivermectin off-label from 01 June 2023, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announced today.

A regulatory U-turn

This is a reversal of a national ban on off-label prescribing of ivermectin, which the TGA enacted on 10 September 2021, in an attempt to prevent doctors from prescribing the drug to treat Covid.

At the time, the TGA stated that the restriction was necessary because:

  • People would be at risk if they took ivermectin instead of getting vaccinated
  • People who took ivermectin may choose not to get tested or to seek medical care if they had symptoms
  • Social media posts were promoting higher doses of ivermectin than what is normally recommended for approved uses
  • There had been a 3-4 fold uptake in ivermectin and the TGA was worried about a shortage disadvantaging vulnerable people who really needed the drug

So, instead of launching a nationwide education campaign and recommending that the Australian Government throw a few million dollars at bolstering the national stockpile of ivermectin, the TGA effectively banned the drug for all but a narrow set of uses.

The TGA has now relaxed the ban because, there is sufficient evidence that the safety risks to individuals and public health is low when prescribed by a general practitioner in the current health climate.

It would seem, though, that there was sufficient evidence of ivermectins safety all along. In July 2021, Rebecca Weisser wrote in Ivermectin. Its as Aussie as Vegemite, for Spectator Australia:

As for safety, 3.7 billion doses of ivermectin have been used since 1987 and in 30 years, only 20 deaths following its use have been reported to the UNs Vigi-Access database. Compare that to remdesivir, which has been given emergency use authorisation to treat Covid in Australian hospitals. In 12 months, there have been 551 deaths reported. Indeed, a study published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association this week found remdesivir did not increase survival, just time spent in hospital.

The TGAs stated concerns over ivermectins safety back in September 2021 seem incoherent when taken alongside....

Feds Must Sink $1 Billion Into Ending Sexual, Domestic, Family Violence, Says Frontline Org "IndyWatch Feed National"

As the federal budget approaches, a key area of the Albanese governments focus must be on putting a stop to sexual, domestic and family violence by creating new systems that are trauma-informed and which support survivors, says one of the nations lead advocacy and assistance groups.

Full Stop Australia has previously made calls for the sector to be funded with $1 billion a year to put a full stop to sexual, domestic and family violence.

That is our clarion call, and we make it again, said Tara Hunter, Acting CEO of Full Stop Australia.

Ms Hunter said in the wake of yesterdays Domestic Violence Remembrance Day (May 3), and reflecting on Domestic Violence Prevention Month (May), its important to honour the many lives lost as a result of domestic and family violence.

At the very least, Ms Hunter said, there must be a Commonwealth commitment to structural and programmatic change that works to end sexual, domestic and family violence.

As we reflect on the 56 lives lost in 2022 in domestic and family violence related deaths, we are reminded again that this is absolutely a life and death matter.

Acting CEO of Full Stop Australia, Tara Hunter.

These deaths are preventable and require a resounding, unified and multi-pronged response. We require a system that supports initiatives from prevention and crisis response through to recovery.

This requires adequate and sustained funding, with a commitment to legislative change and building the capacity of workforces across the sector.

Ms Hunter said that with the federal budget to be announced by the Treasurer next week, its critical that government prioritise funding that supports everything from prevention to recovery.

This should include:

  • Tailored age-appropriate consent education from early childhood that instils the key tenets of bodily autonomy.
  • Rigorous dismantling of gender norms and stereotypes, through education, campaigns, policy reform and advocacy, across the private and public sector, particularly in education settings and workplaces.
  • Comprehensive response network that is capacitated, in a trauma-informed way, to handle the enormous, and steadily increasing demand on services. This should be guided by clear care-coordination princ...

Mortgage holders in Australia hoping for relief amid an apparent levelling out of rising inflation rates had better think again warns an economics expert, with interest rates likely to continue rising until later in the year, and cuts not expected until as late as 2025.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has executed 11 consecutive rate hikes since May 2022. Dr Peng Yew, a lecturer in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management at RMIT University in Melbourne, said the economic pain wasnt over yet.

Although inflation seems to have peaked, albeit at a still stubbornly high 7 per cent, the RBA has reiterated its commitment to bringing inflation within 2 to 3 per cent, said Dr Yew.

National Australia Bank are predicting the RBA will lift the cash rate three more times before September 2023. Along with Westpac and ANZ, theyve also forecast interest rate cuts, but not until 2024 and 2025.

If the major banks predictions are correct, it is reasonable to expect the mortgage interest rate will stay high, and even potentially continue to rise, in 2023 and into 2024, he said.

Australians are already struggling under the rising cost of living. After 11 cash rate hikes, a home loan mortgage rate is now around 5.6 per cent, meaning the repayment on a 25-year $600,000 NAB base variable mortgage will have climbed approximately $1,500 a month. At the same time, the borrowing power of homebuyers is reduced.

Nab Walgett? The National Australia Bank did more than just nab things.

These factors are negatively impacting the housing market, Dr Yew said. These issues give rise to further emerging housing supply issues.

As the housing market dips, a significant number of would-be sellers have (and are likely to continue to) withdraw from the market, resulting in fewer [available]properties.

Approximately 1,730 properties were put under the hammer across the nations capitals in the last week of April, which was significantly lower than the 2,699 in the same weekend last year, according to an ABC report.

Mr Yew said the building sector is also experiencing high levels of upheaval and hardship.

BBC News website reporting on PIJ hunger striker and rocket attacks "IndyWatch Feed National"

On the morning of May 2nd a report headlined Palestinian Khader Adnan dies in Israel jail after 86 days on hunger strike appeared on the BBC News websites Middle East page.

The BBCs euphemistic portrayal of Palestinian Islamic Jihad as a militant group rather than an Iranian backed terrorist organisation designated by the UK, the US, the EU, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Israel clearly does not contribute to readers understanding of the reason for Adnans detention.

Readers of that report were not informed that Khader Adnan had been arrested in February for suspected membership in a terror group, support for a terrorist organisation and incitement or that he had been indicted and was being held in custody until the completion of the legal proceedings.

As the day went on amendments were made to the BBCs report (but not including the main photo caption describing Adnan as an May 2nd was credited to...

BRICS block set to renew and become bigger "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Jim Hayes

Reacting to increasingly uncertain economic times and political pressure from Washington to maintain American dominance over the global economy is causing a growing list of nations to adopt new strategies.

One of these is the revival of the BRICS nations. This is the coalition of Brazil, Russia. India, China, and South Africa, all of them major economies. These member nations are due to meet in south Africa during August. A major issue is moving further on discarding the use of United Sates dollar to pay for transactions between them. This is serious, because the make up the single biggest economic block, representing about two thirds of the worlds population.

Last year the greenbacks share of international reserves had slipped down from 55 percent in the previous year to 47 percent. In 2003, it was 66 percent. This marks a long-term decline, and it prompted U.S. Secretary of State Janet Yellen to admit, there is a risk that the U.S. currencys dominance as the medium of international trade could end.

The re-emergence of BRICS adds to this uncertainty.

Last week, during Chinas President Xi Jinping was in Brazil meeting with President Incio Lula da Silva, and they talked about greater cooperation and a series of agreements to boost climate sustainable development.

A new tranche of agreements has recently been signed by Russia and China. India is talking with both of them to get in on some of the action. So is South Africa. These are growing economies that are attracting a lot of global attention.

Reports suggest that there are about 20 other nations seeking to join BRICS. If they do, it will encompass most of humanity, and this means that all those out of the block could be locked out of the global economy.

To put this into its full perspective, the new alignment will involve not only the fastest growing economies and most of manufacturing. It will involve most of the Middle East and Persian Gulf area, which supplies much of the worlds oil, and it is also likely to involve Mexico and Venezuela, which are also major oil producers.

The Biggest impact will be on the United States, which particularly dependent on investing in the global economy. Without this, the domestic economy is in real tro...

Ozempic, obesity, and the modern food trap "IndyWatch Feed National"

Ozempic is the new "miracle" drug on the market, although it's not a new drug, it's just a successful drug used for diabetes control that has been re-purposed for weight loss. It has enjoyed spectacular media headlines because of its endorsement by celebrities, especially with TicTok's documenting the weight loss - called body transformation - of celebrities having millions of viewers and even an endorsement from Elon Musk.   This enthusiasm is justified because in Australia almost two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese and its economic cost was estimated to be $11.8b in 2018.   While it does have some side effects it has been a life changer, and perhaps life saver, for those with morbid obesity.   Unfortunately, its newfound popularity with those just wanting to lose a few kilos has created a drug shortage that threatens the supply to diabetes sufferers.

Its also highly controversial because the basic fundamental of health care is, or should be, based on the 16th-century thoughts of Desiderius Erasmus, a Dutch philosopher and humanist who is attributed with the  quote,  "Prevention is better than cure."

And Ozempic, despite its action triggering a chemical repugnance to food that reduces calorie intake, is still a process that addresses the symptom and not the cause.    This is not just nit-picking, the process that created this crisis was not only a cruel trick on humanity but one that became entrenched through the tacit support of governments.   The relevantly sudden increase in body mass (BMI) can be documented by viewing images of people taken from the early days of photography.      In those images, most people appear what we might call skinny, but they were what humans had always been and perhaps what we should be.   By following the time scale these photos reveal changes that were largely the result of diet.  Most noticeable was an increase in height of adolescents which came from the better diet available after WW2 restrictions but around the 1970's weight increases become apparent.

The causes for this sudden weight change and its associated health problems has been the subject of a great deal of research - one that was hampered by conflicting views of health professionals and spurious information.   Researchers were also confronted with different situations that existed in nations like Egypt, Mexico, the US, and Australia and too often targeted causes, like lack of exercise, that were being promoted by organizations with vested interests.   It took almost 30 years to debunk the argument that being overweight was caused by lack of...

In defence of utopian speculation: what might a safe and just world look like? "IndyWatch Feed National"

There is no doubt merit in exploring what abolition might look like in practice. However, to focus solely on defending abolition on pragmatic grounds is to concede that political change must be realistic to be compelling. In addition to arguing that abolition is pragmatic, its also important to not lose sight of its principlesand one way to do this may involve leaning into the power of utopian speculation to shape our sense of the possible.

US Big Tech had inside running before IPEF became public "IndyWatch Feed National"

May 4, 2023: Australians first heard about the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) in March 2022, but Bloomberg reports that emails released to the US public this week show that the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) was seeking the input of Amazon and Google from January 2022. The corporate lobbyists were all former USTR officials.

IPEF includes the US, Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Fiji and Vietnam. The next round of formal IPEF negotiations take place in Singapore next week.

President Bidens rhetoric about IPEF emphasises the benefits for workers, consumers and the environment, but the reality is that giant internet corporations had the inside running long before trade unions, environment and community advocates were aware of the initiative.

When the US published the four pillars for IPEF in September 2022, the Trade Pillar included: We intend to advance inclusive digital trade by building an environment of trust and confidence in the digital economy, by addressing discriminatory practices, and by promoting trusted and secure cross-border data flows. This is the Big Tech language for deregulation of cross-border data flows, no requirement for a local presence, and no government access to algorithms and source code.

In a January 2022 email to Amazon, a USTR official requested multiple meetings between Sarah Bianchi, the deputy trade representative, and Michael Punke and Jennifer Prescott, members of Amazons government affairs team and former USTR officials, to get to know them better. Punke had been a deputy trade representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization, while Prescott was an Assistant Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources.

Bianchis staff emailed to set up an additional meeting with Amazon lobbyist Arrow Augerot, previously deputy assistant for congressional affairs at USTR, in February 2022. And Bianchis staff in February contacted Google Cloud lobbyist Behnaz Kibria, another former USTR official, to request an off-the-record meeting to get feedback on IPEF.

They also show that USTR reached out to South Korean government officials about legislation intended to pare back the power of Apple Inc. and Googles app stores....

Jane Walsh, Director of BreastScreen North Coast says a screening mammogram is one of the most important things women aged 50-74 can do for their health.

A mammogram can pick-up cancers that cannot be seen or felt. In NSW one in seven women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

A mammogram every two years takes just 20 minutes and it could save your lif, said Ms Walsh.

Detecting breast cancer early increases your chance of survival while reducing the likelihood of invasive treatment, such as mastectomy or chemotherapy.

Around 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history. This is why breast cancer screening is so important for all eligible women.

Bringing these vital services to Murwillumbah means more local women can participate and get the support they need. Life gets busy and we want women to make their health a priority.

Unraveling the Epstein-Chomsky Relationship "IndyWatch Feed National"

By Whitney Webb | Unlimited Hangout | May 3, 2023

Recent revelations that the renowned linguist and political activist met with Jeffrey Epstein several times have surprised and confused many. Why was Epstein interested in meeting with Noam Chomsky? And why did Chomsky agree to meet him despite his past? The answer may surprise you.

On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal published a report detailing information contained within a trove of previously unreported documents of the deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Those documents, which have not been publicly released and appear to have been passed solely to the Journal, included Epsteins private calendar and meeting schedules. The documents, per the Journal, contain thousands of pages of emails and schedules from 2013 to 2017 and as the report notes detail Epsteins dealings with several prominent individuals whose names were not on his flight logs or his infamous little black book of contacts. One of these individuals is the renowned linguist, political commentator and critic of capitalism and empire, Noam Chomsky.

Chomsky, who has previously discussed the Epstein case in interviews and who has maintained that Epsteins ties to intelligence agencies should be considered a conspiracy theory, had not previously disclosed these meetings. Chomsky, when confronted by Journal reporters, was evasive, but ultimately admitted to meeting and knowing Jeffrey Epstein.

Many, largely on the left, have expressed dismay and confusion as to why someone with the political views of Chomsky would willingly meet, not once but several times, with someone like Jeffrey Epstein, particularly well after Epsteins notoriety as a sex trafficker and pedophile. As this report will show, Epstein appeared to view Chomsky as another intellectual who could help guide his decisions when it came to his scientific obsessions namely, transhumanism and eugenics. What Chomsky gained in return from meeting with Epstein isnt as clear.

Why Did Chomsky Meet with Epstein?

According to the Journal, Chomskys meetings with Epstein took place during the years 2015 and 2016, while Chomsky taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT. Chomsky told the Journal that he met with Epstein to discuss topic...

Growth, housing rights and the golden egg the Ballina-isation of Byron "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

What an outcome on holiday letting its a bit like offering $1,000 for a horse and getting it for $500.

Luxury housing construction in Ballina Shire. Photo David Lowe.

Yeeha! Happy as I am about the headline outcome, Recommendation 4 by the IPC commissioners suggests opening up more land the Ballina-isation of Byron.

This sends shivers down my spine, especially when I heard a developer promising to clear forest for suburbs because, people here have a right to housing too.

And the chorus is joined by well-meaning selfless and sensible housing advocates who jump on the linguistic bandwagon of a right to housing.

But housing, like health and many other needs, is not a right in any real sense. We might want it to be, but in Australia, as a question of law, it just isnt. Housing in Australia is either a commodity or a benefit. Or more accurately, a commodity and a benefit, given the tax treatment of capital gains and negative gearing. Thats why we always talk of a housing market just another widget to be part of the ebb and flow of supply and demand.

There are all sorts of rights aspirational rights, internationally recognised rights, and human rights to name a few. But they are all worth nothing more than a limp lettuce leaf, unless they are legally...

Education campaign underpins Councils new leg rope policy "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

If a law is never enforced, is it still a law?

This is a key question raised by Byron Councils new regulation requiring surfers at local beaches to wear leg ropes.

In a development that had mainstream media frothing like groms in a cyclone last week, Byron Shire Council decided to erect signs warning surfers that they could be fined unless they are properly tethered to their boards.

Under the rules, surfers could theoretically face a fine of up to $1,100 if they dont rope up.

However, the reality is that such a policy, while sending a message to surfers about the need to be safe in the waves, is virtually impossible to enforce.

Putting aside the fact that the rules wont come into force until signs are erected during the next financial year, there remains no practical way to enforce them, and bring about a successful prosecution if the matter is challenged in court.

Given the comments in the staff report about the effectiveness of the signage and our inability to enforce it, Im wondering if this is a good use of money, given our difficult circumstances, Mayor Michael Lyon said.

Were putting a new burden on the budget next year that is already under pressure, and putting a greater burden on our already very busy compliance officers.

I dont think this should be a priority at all for compliance staff. I want to make sure our compliance priorities stay with animal enforcement, parking and camping enforcement and other matters that are much more effective.

However, the mover of last weeks motion, Independent councillor, Cate Coorey, said that the rules and accompanying community education campaign were about changing Byrons surf culture.

Changing culture

Part of how we make this happen is by changing culture, Cr Coorey said.

Thats why a huge part of this motion is about community education.

Overwhelmingly Im seeing community support for this, including from surfers.

People say, well, surfers are a rebellious community, and they wont support it. But they nearly all do because they nearly all wear leg ropes.

This is about keeping surfers safe from each other.

The new rules come following a number of recent incidents in which surfers suffered serious injuries after.....

Google Failing to Enforce Policy Against Climate Disinformation Ads, New Report Finds "IndyWatch Feed National"

new report has found that Google is breaking its October 2021 promise to not sell ads on YouTube videos containing climate disinformation.

The Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) coalition and the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) collected 200 examples of climate disinformation YouTube videos, which collectively serve ads to over 73 million viewers. But thats probably the tip of the iceberg, CCDH head of research Callum Hood told the New York Times. Of those videos, (with 18 million total views), 100 meet Googles very narrow definition of climate disinformation, which applies only to denial of the existence or human causes of climate change.

The second set of 100 videos meets CAADs definition of climate disinformation, which accounts for popular tactics like greenwashing. These videos amassed 55 million views, demonstrating the weakness of Googles current definition of climate disinformation.

During the course of the research, only eight videos in the researchers dataset were demonetized by Google. Tech companies make big promises on hate and misinformation because they know its hard to see if theyve kept them, said CCDHs Head of Research Callum Hood in a press release.

Despite Googles green grandstanding, its ads continue to fuel the climate denial industry. Brands featured in ads on climate denial included Politico, Google itself, and the new Jane Fonda movie 80 for Brady. Ms. Fonda told the Times she was appalled that an ad for one of my movies appears on one of those videos, and hope YouTube stops this practice immediately, and found it abhorrent that YouTube would violate its own policy [while] the earth is burning.

Cultural differences: Immigrants in Germany "IndyWatch Feed National"

This is a bit of a light hearted post, but with an interesting observation. I quite enjoy watching videos of people who move to Germany. Their surprise at things taken for granted gives me food for thought as well as amusement. Some themes seem to be constant: Germans walk. For fun. No matter whether the immigrant is from the US or Vietnam, they are both fascinated and appalled by the German passion for going for walks.

Or the utter confusion of rental flats not having a kitchen. The answer to that is: Germans dont move and love their kitchens. We plan them more carefully than the bedroom. And we really dont like moving. Theres a saying that goes moving twice is like burning down once, so once we moved in, we try not to move out again. The idea of buying a starter home is as alien as the idea of buying an AR 15 at Walmart. So unless youre moving into a student flat or a shared apartment, bring your own kitchen.

These matters are constants, but of course, other things will seem more or less strange, depending on your country of origin. But then theres a noticeable difference not in between people from different countries, but of US Americans of different genders. American women will often be full of praise: they can easily and cheaply get fresh produce! Childcare is only 150 bucks a month! Oh, and did I mention healthcare? US American men on the other hand complain about not being allowed to kill endangered species and pour oil down the drain. Its tyranny, I tell you!*

  • Yes, you need a fishing license. Yes, you have to pass a test, showing that you know the fish, if and when youre allowed to catch them, minimum size and what bait is ok. Oh, and that you can kill a fish quickly. No Ive been fishing in the USA since I was 5 does not count. No, you are not allowed to wash your car at home. Washing it with soap will introduce pollutants into the wastewater. You have to go to a carwash where the wastewater will be filtered to remove motor oil and other pollutants.

Fedi Raises $17 Million In Fundraising Round Led By Ego Death Capital "IndyWatch Feed National"

The company, now having raised $21.21 million, system later in May.

Fedi, Inc., a U.S.-based developer of community-empowering financial and data technology utilizing Fedimints on Bitcoin, has raised $17 million in a Series A round of financing.

operating system aimed at the builder community later this month. Fedi seeks to empower individuals to collaborate through "federations" made up of friends, families, neighbors, nonprofit organizations, social clubs, businesses, conferences and other forms of community to take control of their money, data and digital lives while protecting user privacy and autonomy.

The open-source Fedimint protocol, on which Fedi is built, makes it easy for developers to build additional apps and modules to complement Fedi's offerings and give more options to users. It provides a resilient, privacy-protecting, and simple way for people who dont have access to or dont trust centralized alternatives to secure and use their data and money, a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine explained.

The financing round was led by Ego Death Capital, with participation from Block, Kingsway, Trammell Venture Partners and Timechain, among others. This funding brings Fedi's total funding to $21.21 million. Fedi CEO Obi Nwosu said that the interest in the round allowed them to select investors that are fully aligned with the future they are trying to create with Fedi.

Fedi's community or "second-party" custody model offers a secure alternative to third-party cryptocurrency exchanges, cloud backup services and encrypted messaging apps. The system's underlying technology is readymade for rapid expansion and can be adapted to do virtually all the things people currently use their smartphone or computer to do. The system aims to answer the security, privacy and trust deficiencies of current alternatives, bringing users benefits similar to self-custody without technical or financial barriers to entry.

Fedi is offering a truly decentralized and federated way not only to custody bitcoin but to take back control of everything that matters in your digital life, said Jeff Booth, co-founder of Ego Death Capital and lead investor for this series. Its hard to overstate what this combination of technologies makes possible, and while I expect Fedi to be at the forefront, Im just as excited by what people are going to build around it. It is truly something that can bring value and a brighter future for billions of people, he added.

So far away from home the Diggers who fought in Spain "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Weve poured the wine of anger
On the graves of honest men.
Weve raised the banner once before
Well raise it once again.
In the holy ground of memory
The dragons teeth are sown.
Well send our sons to die again
So far away from home.
Paul Hemphill, I Gotta Book

Eighty four years ago last month, the Spanish cities of Madrid and Valencia fell to the nationalist forces of Francisco Franco. Victory was proclaimed as Franco placed his sword to rest upon the altar of a church declaring that he wouldnt raise the blade again until Spain was in peril. The Spanish Civil War that had claimed hundreds of thousands of lives (upwards of half a million, possibly up to two) was at an end; the long march of the generalissimo was over and the reign of the Caudillo had begun. It endured until his death in 1975.

The Spanish Civil War was long, brutal and bloody, and medieval in its savagery. It was a war of armies and of militias, of men and women, of skirmishes and set-piece battles, of massacres and reprisals, and of wars within wars. It saw cities besieged and starved into surrender and towns destroyed by bombers and heavy artillery. It cut a swathe across the country leaving scars that endure to this day.

It became a proxy war for three dictators Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin who dispatched men and machines to fight under false flags in what would appear in retrospect to be a rehearsal for wars to come. It was a magnet for idealists and activists of disparate political creeds and from many lands who were to fight and die on both sides, including the celebrated International Brigades. It lured writers and poets who were to chronicle its confusion and carnage, including Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, WH Auden, Andr Malraux and Arthur Koastler. Many perished, the most famous being the Spanish poet Federico Garca Lorca, murdered by Nationalist militia and buried in an unmarked grave, one of many unquiet graves scattered throughout the land.

We republish below a remarkable story of that long forgotten army in a long-forgotten war, and also, an article about the International Brigades.

Input sought on new Helensburgh swimming pool "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

WOLLONGONG City Council is calling for feedback on a draft concept plan for the Helensburgh Pool.

Residents have until Sunday May 7 to share their thoughts on the project and have ideas incorporated into the project brief which will go to a specialist aquatic designer.

Council is proposing that the major upgrade will include:

  • Replace the existing pool with a new 25 metre pool with 6 lanes, a contemporary accessible ramp style entry and wet deck perimeter (which makes the water surface level with the surrounding paving)
  • A water splash pad
  • New LED Floodlighting
  • A solar shade structure

Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said that the project would form one part of the Helensburgh Parks multisport facility upgrade.

Scientists sign letter to stop Beetaloo fracking "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Contributed by Adam Carlton

A hundred scientists have signed a letter calling on the Northern Territory government to abandon plans for fracking the Beetaloo Basin. They say the project will inflict damage on our climate if it goes ahead.

The letter has been published in national newspapers. It reflects calls from the International Energy Agency, the United Nations, and experts around the world calling for an end to fossil fuel development.

The government claim that the project is necessary to avert what it says is an energy doesnt hold water. There are many other ways to produce energy. Ignoring this, the fracking of Beetaloo was approved last month. The justification used was a flawed report of the Pepper Inquiry that found new risks involved. This was a case of whitewashing, because the inquirys scope was limited to inevitably produce a wrong report, according to the scientists.

They say the Northern Territory is failing to keep its commitment to implement all the recommendations of the Scientific Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracturing., aimed at ensuring there is no net increase of emissions emitted in Australia from fracking.

The signatories claim that the [project will could add up to 89 million tonnes of emissions to the atmosphere every year, which is equivalent to four times current emissions of the Northern Territory.

Australia has been suffering severe bushfire seasons, intense flooding rains, were seeing our coral reefs die off before our eyes all of these events are costing the Australian economy hugely, UNSW Professor Matthew England said. He is a specialist in oceans and the impact of global climate change.

The Northern Territory environment minister Lauren Moss insists that the federal governments safeguard mechanism, will ensure carbon emissions by 43 percent by 2030. This is disputed since...

Fireball crossing Western Australian sky on May 2 likely a 10cm meteor, astronomer says "IndyWatch Feed National"

Western Australia's southern sky lit up early this morning as a fireball entered the earth's atmosphere and streaked across the sky to end south of Rottnest Island in Perth. Early risers spotted the meteor at 5:03am and it lasted about 15 seconds as it travelled from east to west. Planet astronomer Dr Hadrien Devillepoix dismissed claims it was space junk and said it was a natural object that entered the atmosphere. "People would have had a really good show of it," he said. "It was a very shallow entry, so a very slow, long fireball basically crossing the entire Wheatbelt."

Psychiatrogenesis (Whither Psychiatry or Reform) "IndyWatch Feed National"

It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society
attributed to Jiddu Krishnamurti

The behaviour of any bureaucratic organisation can best be understood by assuming that it is controlled by a secret cabal of its enemies.
attributed to Robert Conquest

Having worked in multiple public services in the UK and Australia over the last 27 years, the constant personal struggle has been, Am I doing more harm than good?

Sadly, the conclusion of this reflection is that iatrogenesis is the norm from diagnosis to treatment, and doing good is the exception. Diagnoses, especially borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia, lead to a pathological, limiting view of oneself and enshrine a nocebo effect that is difficult to shrug off. Medication treatment may provide some symptom improvement, but also comes with a panoply of side effects and withdrawal symptoms.

lonely man on the bench autumn, winterThe reason I went into psychiatry was that, unlike other medical disciplines with clear pathogenesis, clinical markers, and effective interventions, psychiatry was a much more ethereal specialty. Here, there was a balance to be made between the is-ness of the clinical encounter and the socio-politico-psychological cultural context in which the meeting was taking place.

There was no room for hubris or certainty; medication sometimes worked, hospitalisation may help in a crisis, self-harm may be a vitally important survival mechanism for someone. You could never get comfortable in the job; every day was challenging, and being an expert in psychiatry seemed oxymoronic.

But, as the years wore on, I saw a precipitous decline in deep listening, a drift to seeing people as diagnoses rathe...

WIRADJURI man and actor Luke Carroll will appear in a new play At What Cost?

You most likely have seen Luke Carrolls face on the long-running childrens show Play School playing with Big Ted and Jemima.

Carroll has been acting since the tender age of nine. His first appearance was in the Flying Doctors as Ernie Dingos younger brother.

Carroll said Dingo soon became a mentor to him. When they returned to Sydney from shooting the popular soap opera, the pair soon bonded over their shared love of sports.

Ernie would come and pick me up from the city and we both have a love of sport, in particular basketball, he said.

We would go down to Chinatown, have a feed and just talk.

Over that meal he told me a lot about the industry, mainly about keeping my head on my shoulders and to not get a big head, and to keep my ego in check.

While Dingo was his main mentor within the Australian television and film industry, off the screen his late mum was his main supporter.

Remembering ANZAC Day and the Frontier Wars "IndyWatch Feed National"

ANZAC mourners were confronted this year with a statue of Lachlan Macquarie in Windsors McQuade Park doused in red paint and handprints with the phrases here stands a mass murderer who ordered the genocide and no pride in genocide.

I cant argue with the sentiment, Macquarie as Governor of NSW was responsible for the mass murder of our people I get it was ANZAC Day and thats the whole point of the protest but you dont win any allies with such strategy.

The only people who would feel any sense of accomplishment are the protestors, and not because they are winning people over towards their view or building reconciliation, its the exact opposite.

As I wrote last issue extremists are only interested in ripping relationships apart they have no want in bringing people together or heal our tragic past nor build towards an inclusive future.

Every year I see more and more of our Mob on social media posting memorials to loved ones who served Australia in WWI, WWII and service women and men from other wars.

This means for many of our people, the want to be accepted within greater Australian society and respecting those who fought for this country is

The 400m is the hardest. You have to have speed but also endurance and you need to pace yourself when you run it. Theres a lot of thinking in that event and you really have to focus.

You Ask, We Answer: How much does it cost Eau Claire to add fluoride to its water? "IndyWatch Feed National"

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW)  For this edition of You Ask, We Answer, one viewer is wondering how much it costs the city of Eau Claire to add fluoride to its drinking water?

City officials say the 2023 fluoride budget is $48,800. They say thats pretty typical, though the cost of the mineral has increased with Covid and inflation.

The city has been adding fluoride to its water since the 1950s. Fluoride is recommended by the Department of Health and the Department of Natural Resources for its benefits to dental hygiene. Officials say it lowers the risk of cavities, especially in kids.

Trace amounts of fluoride are injected as water leaves the treatment plant. Then, its a lot of lab work.

Every four hours an operator at the plant is checking the fluoride content in the water thats leaving and verifying that its at the optimal level. And then we also go out daily and grab samples from our distribution center, bring them back and analyze them for fluoride content, said water plant supervisor Mark Nelson.

Eau Claire has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Health for its optimal fluoride levels.

According to the DNR, Menomonie also adds fluoride to its drinking water but Chippewa Falls, Lake Hallie and Altoona do not.
