LOGGING KOALAS TO EXTINCTION Clarence Valley Conservation Coalition

North East Forests Alliance Media Release

May 28 2023

The North East Forest Alliance is calling on upon the NSW and Commonwealth Environment Ministers to urgently intervene to protect the most important Koala habitat identified by their governments, after an assessment of the Forestry Corporations 12 month Plan of Logging Operations for the NSW north coast found they include 41,000 ha of Nationally Important Koala Areas and 2,700 ha of Koala Hubs.

Both Governments have undertaken assessments to identify the most important Koala habitat for protection, and yet they have allowed the Forestry Corporation to go on logging these habitats without any changes to the inadequate 2018 logging rules, even in areas where Koalas were decimated by the 2019/20 wildfires, NEFA spokesperson Dailan Pugh said.

If our governments were genuine about saving north coast Koalas then they would immediately protect the 234,000 ha of Nationally Important Koala Areas and 15,000 ha of koala hubs they identified on State forests Mr. Pugh said.

In accordance with its National Recovery Plan, in 2021 the Commonwealth identified Nationally Important Koala Areas as priority koala habitat for incorporation into state protected areas. On the north coast 233,945 ha (23.6%) of Nationally Important Koala Areas occur on State forests.

At the request of the NSW Chief Scientist, in 2017 the Office of Environment and Heritage analysed Koala records "to delineate highly significant local scale areas of koala occupancy currently known for protection". On the north coast 15,318 ha (24.4%) of Koala Hubs occur on State forests.

What Australian Unions declared to be "the largest increase to minimum and Award wages in Australias history" occurred on Thursday 1 June 2023 - effective 1 July North Coast Voices

This was Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) Secretary Sally McManus writing on the Australian Unions website, 2 June 2023:

Today the Fair Work Commission announced that workers on the national minimum wage will receive a pay rise of 8.6 per cent. Workers on Award wages will have their pay increased by 5.75 per cent. Both of those increases will come into effect in the first pay period after 1 July 2023.

The union movement fought hard for this pay increase. Up against us were the big business lobby who argued for a real-wage cut.

All union members should be proud of this pay rise. Its the largest increase to minimum and Award wages in Australias history.

Its what unions do we use our strength in numbers to ensure that working peoples pay gets moving again.

Increasing pay is the most important step to reducing the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.

Come July 2023 the approx. 20.5 per cent of Australian employees (est. 2.75 million individuals) who are paid in accordance with minimum wage rates in modern awards and the...

Tragic death of two men in Yamba Local News Echonetdaily

NSW Police have today spoken to the media after the body of a man and a teenage boy were located inside a home at Yamba yesterday.

At about 1.10pm yesterday Thursday 1 June police were called to a property on Kookaburra Circuit, Yamba, after reports two bodies had been found.

The bodies of a 58-year-old man and 15-year-old boy were located inside the property, both suffering gunshot wounds.

While the investigation by officers from Coffs Clarence Police District is in its infancy, police dont believe a third party was involved with few details being released this tragedy appears to be a murdersuicide with a strong possibility that the older man held the weapon.

A deer in the headlights Local News Echonetdaily

Feral deer are a problem in Queensland and could potentially establish in the Northern Rivers if prompt action isnt taken. Photo supplied.

The Tweed Shire, Byron Shire, and Kyogle councils have joined forces to find out just what is happening with feral deer in the region.

The councils have launched a survey to understand the communitys perception of feral deer, the impacts of feral deer, the presence or absence of feral deer in the Northern Rivers, and the need to control them.

Local feral deer management expert Rachel Hughes, who is managing the survey on behalf of the councils, said feral deer were spreading and it could potentially be a big problem if we dont take action now.

Feral deer are in all states and territories of Australia but they are in largest numbers in the eastern parts of Victoria and NSW, where they are spreading quickly, said Ms Hughes.

For example, in NSW, the 6 species of feral deer now inhabit 22 per cent of the State, where their distribution has spread by 35 per cent since 2016.

Just over the border in Queensland, feral deer are a significant problem and have recently been spotted in front yards, along roads and in suburbia. If we dont act now, it wont be long before they potentially establish in the Northern Rivers too.

Residents asked to fill out survey

Council is urging residents to fill out the new survey with results to be used to formulate integrated management programs to stop the spread and prevent the establishment of feral deer in the Northern Rivers.

Our challenge is to stop the...

Sustainable fashion course on offer Local News Echonetdaily

Sustainable fashion student, Gabriel Shine, designer and guest tutor, Jenny Bannister with course co-ordinator, Cate Coorey. Photo supplied.

Born in Byron, bred in a sweatshop, made from earth-destroying parts and brought back to you with copious carbon miles its fast fashion, but its not a good look.

Australians, it seems, must choose between going naked or wearing clothes that never quite fit their increasingly informed ethical standards.

While Byronites are known to enjoy baring all, winter is upon us and the Byron Community College (BCC) is offering another path: a six-week course in sustainable fashion.

Cate Coorey, known to many for her work as an independent Byron Shire councillor, is also a long-time tutor at BCC, and has coordinated the course, featuring guest experts and leading sustainable fashion practitioners.

Learn how to live more consciously

Emerging designers and anyone who wants to learn how to live more consciously is expected to benefit, Ms Coorey says.

Each day has got a different aspect to sustainable and ethical fashion, Ms Coorey told The Echo, reducing the amount o...

The Bayside Residents Association (BRA) say the suburb is on the verge of a massive population increase from five separate developments.

BRA President, Peter Tanner, told The Echo they aim to make the suburb a true community, rather than a drive-in, drive-out housing development on the southern end of Brunswick Heads.

Ballooning population

TETRIARY EDUCATION STATE OF PLAY 2023: Australia took 121 years to finally establish national free university education and less than 33 years to totally destroy the idea that tertiary education should be fee free North Coast Voices

In 1974 the Whitlam Labor Government gave the Commonwealth full control over higher education funding and made a university education free for those who met the educational entrance requirements of tertiary institutions.

In 1976 the Fraser Coalition Government tried to re-introduced tuition fees for post-graduate and second degrees as well as for tuition fees for foreign students with limited success.

However by 1983 the international and national economic climate began to test the resolve of the incoming Hawke Labor Government and in the August 1988 Budget it announced that it would introduce university tuition fees via the Higher Education Funding Act 1988 (HECS).

The scheme was to have only one rate of contribution ($1,800 in 1989) and an up-front payment discount of 15 per cent on tuition fees. Repayment of the HECS debt was to begin once the university graduate began to earn a wage over the compulsory repayment threshold and, any unpaid HECS debts would be discharged on the death of the graduate.

In the following years the Hawke and Keating Labor Governments tinkered with repayment schedules and introduced new schemes based on HECS repayment arrangements for specific groups of students.

However it was during the years of the Howard Coalition Government that the floodgates were fully opened allowing the user pays rationale to begin flooding across higher education. The debt repayment threshold kicked in at a lower annual income and universities were given greater licence to use market forces as a tool in setting course fees, amongst other measures.
