Grafton Base Hospital is a Level 3/4 rural community hospital with an est. 68 bed inpatient capacity which provides acute medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric, anaesthetic, geriatric, obstetric and maternity, intensive and critical care, renal, oncology, palliative care, emergency, some specialist outpatient services and day surgery facilities. Maclean District Hospital is a Level 3 rural community hospital with an est. <43 inpatient bed capacity, an inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and a Day Surgery Unit.

Clarence Valley Independent, 14 June 2023:

Between Grafton and Maclean Hospitals another 40 nurses are needed to provide adequate staffing levels say the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association as the Local Health District tries to fill 180 nursing vacancies across the region.

NSW Nurses and Midwives Association Clarence Valley branch secretary Thea Koval said without agency nursing staff being called in, who are paid significantly more than NSW Health nurses, Maclean and Grafton hospitals would struggle to operate.

Without agency nursing staff our hospitals would not be able to be run with the nurses employed only by NSW Health, she said.

The Great Koala National Park is no closer to becoming a reality than it was when Labor made a commitment to such a park in January 2015 North Coast Voices

IMAGE: Animal Justice Party NSW

"Of more than 458 000 hectares of Areas of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS) mapped in NSW, only 21% are inside a National Park.

"One of our most iconic species is being subjected to native forest logging and out of control land clearing, and the National Parks estate can't save it unless something big changes.

"Koalas now face extinction in our lifetimes without urgent action. Yet their habitat has virtually no protection from the logging and clearing that is driving this decline.

Quotes of the Week North Coast Voices

Google has announced that soon, when you search a question on its site, the first result displayed will be an AI-generated answer drawn from the open web. But many of the most trustworthy sources of information - academic journals, high-quality newspapers - are locked behind a paywall. There is a real chance the AI-powered search engines that will shape our lives will be biased toward misinformation or even falsehoods.

Weve logged our state forests to exhaustion, so were now going into plantations cutting old growth and remnant forest.

The promised flood funding will NSW Labor honour their commitment? Local News Echonetdaily

Lismore floods March 1, 2022. Photo David Lowe.

In the wake of the devastating 2022 floods that engulfed the northern rivers region the state government created the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) to help rebuild communities, offer buybacks of houses in flood impacted areas and provide assistance for house raising and retrofits.

That was 16 months ago, and local communities and individuals across the northern rivers have been waiting in limbo for the NRRC to come forward with the promised funds that were committed a commitment supported by Liberal, National, Labor and Greens parties.

Blue-green algae alert lifted for the Tweed River at Uki Local News Echonetdaily

Council has lifted the alert for blue-green algae in the Tweed River at Uki (pictured here on 15 June). The amber alert remains for Clarrie Hall Dam. Photo supplied.

Tweed Shire Council has lifted its blue-green algae alert for the Tweed River at Uki, yet the amber alert for Clarrie Hall Dam remains.

While all restrictions on recreational activities from the river at Uki have been removed, the restrictions continue at the dam.

Tweed Shire Council Water and Wastewater Operations Manager Brie Jowett said recent testing by the NATA-accredited Tweed Laboratory Centre had not detected algae in the Tweed River at Uki.

Algae continues to be detected in Clarrie Hall Dam and testing has detected potential toxin-producing species in that waterway.

From today, people can use the Tweed River at Uki for recreational purposes, Mrs Jowett said.

However, our restrictions at the dam remain. Do not eat fish including shellfish from the dam and never drink untreated dam or river water at any time.

If you come into contact with the algae, rinse it off with fresh water and seek medical advice if symptoms appear.

Because water in the dam and its upstream tributaries potentiall...

Bluesfest asked to trial small events, again Local News Echonetdaily

Bluesfest site.

If a noise test takes place in the woods, but nobody knows its happening, does it still make a sound?

The answer, according to Byron Council, is no Well, at least insofar as the recent noise testing undertaken at the Bluesfest site is concerned.

Bluesfest organisers came to Councils meeting last week, asking for permission to run up to 100 small, amplified events per year at the events home in Tyagarah.

In making the application, the Blues crew said they had jumped over all the required hurdles as set out in their 2014 Development Application (DA).

This included conducting six small, amplified events, which would be used as trials to determine whether the noise levels were disturbing to the surrounding environment and those living nearby.

They provided evidence from the trials to support their argument that amplified music does not have a detrimental impact on the surrounding area.

Council staff found this to be compelling evidence, and recommended that the small events application be approved.

The only problem was that, with one exception, nobody told the neighbours that the trials were taking place, or how they could provide feedback afterwards.

This is a very clear-cut case of not following procedures, Tyagarah resident, Kath Morgan, told last weeks Council meeting.

Were just a...

Murder charges dropped over Simone Strobels 2005 death in Lismore "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

The 2005 murder of German backpacker Simone Strobel at the Tourist Caravan Park in Lismore led to the extradition of her then boyfriend Tobias Moran (previously Suckfuell, he changed his name when he married) from Western Australia  on 27 July, 2022. He was charged with murder following a $1 million reward for information that led to a further investigation into the homicide of Simones suspected murder.

However, the charges have now been dropped by the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The naked body of 25 year old Ms Strobel was found on 17 February 2005 covered by palm fronds on a sports ground about 90 metres from the Tourist Caravan Park nowhere she had been staying with Mr Moran.

Activist blocking logging at Boambee State Forest near Coffs Harbour "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

The koala in NSW is predicted to become extinct by 2050. In response the Great Koala National Park (GKNP) was proposed and in 2020 the Department of Planning Industry and Environments (DPIE) identified 55,000 hectares of State Forests for addition to existing National Parks as the Great Koala National Park.

At the time the North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) spokesperson Dailan Pugh welcomed the news saying Its a step in the right direction.

During the NSW election the Labor Party committed $80 million to establish the GKNP which would connect 175,000 hectares of state forests with existing national parks, creating a nature reserve of more than 300,000 hectares according to the ABC

However, in the meantime the NSW Forestry Corporation, a government agency, continues to heavily log areas that are proposed for the GKNP. Local communities have, and continue, to actively block their logging attempts of these native forests.

Boambee State Forest on the western edge of Coffs Harbour, that is proposed to be part of the GKNP, is today being blocked from logging by activist Ella, a forest protector, who is 100 feet up a tree in a secured tree-sit in Boambee State Forest.
