Labors Betrayal Of Sterling First Victims Underscored By Speedy Higgins Payout "IndyWatch Feed National"

When theres political mileage to be made, not to mention mates to be helped, the Australian Labor Party can move with surprising speed. And then theres the partys response to the Sterling First rent-for-life scam, and the fate of the 100 or so elderly victims whove been left floundering for years. Robert Barwick, Research Director for the Australian Citizens Party, explains.

The questions now being asked about Labor Finance Minister Katy Gallaghers speedy compensation payment to Brittany Higgins, within months of taking office, highlight Labors betrayal of the elderly victims of the Sterling First rent-for-life scandal, who remain uncompensated and facing eviction and homelessness.

The Australian Citizens Party (ACP) is calling on the Albanese government to act on Labors pre-election rhetoric and compensate the Sterling First victims for the Australian Securities and Investments Commissions (ASIC) failure to police the Sterling Income Trust Ponzi scheme.

Timeline of a betrayal

In 2015 serial Ponzi scheme offenders launched the Sterling First rent-for-life scheme targeting retirees looking to downsize, but ASIC ignored the directors connections to past financial failures.

In 2015-2017 ASIC ignored multiple complaints about Sterling First, marking them NFANo Further Action despite knowing the scheme was falsely advertised and targeted vulnerable elderly consumers.

In 2017 ASIC ignored a complaint about Sterling First from a Western Australian government department for six months, before finally launching an investigation.

In 2019 Sterling First collapsed, ruining around 130 elderly victims who had paid their rent in advance for the rest of their lives. Renowned consumer advocate, Denise Brailey, began working with the Sterling First victims to achieve an inquiry and compensation.

In 2021 the ACP got involved in the campaign for justice for the Sterling First victims, and in August 2021 mobilised people all over Australia to call and email Senators to request an inquiry into the Sterling First scandal and ASICs failures.

In October 2021, Labor Party Senators Louise Pratt and Deb ONeil took the lead in establishing a Senate inquiry, which held powerful hearings that confirmed ASIC received multiple warnings on Sterling First, but failed to act.

In February 2022 the Senate inquiry released its final report, which slated ASICs performance, including i...

We Can Have A Safe Blood Supply And Donor Equality "IndyWatch Feed National"

Australias policies on blood donation within the GBT community are out of step with international norms, writes Dr Sharon Dane and Rodney Croome.

The lifting of restrictions on people with new tattoos giving blood highlights another contentious restriction, the ban on blood donation by gay men, and bisexual men and trans women who have sex with men (GBT donors).

Debate about gay blood donation is likely to grow in coming months because Australias Lifeblood Service has proposed that GBT donors be allowed to give plasma but not whole blood. We are concerned this will replace an old form of discrimination with a new one.

We feel there is a better path forward with both the science and the international experience showing it is possible to have a safe blood supply and treat all donors equally regardless of sexuality or gender.

The Plasma Pathway

Last year Lifeblood asked the Australian Government to amend the blanket ban on gay blood donation so men who have sex with men can give plasma but not whole blood. The so-called plasma pathway has since been approved by the governments blood regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Now, it will go to state and federal health ministers and the private blood trading company, CSL Behring, for their approval.

But there are significant problems with only allowing GBT people to donate plasma and not whole blood.

While it may increase the supply of plasma it entrenches discrimination and misses an opportunity to tap into a new source of safe whole blood that will help save lives.

The local and national situation

Currently in Australia, gay men, and bisexual men and trans women who have sex with men, are barred from blood donation unless they are sexually abstinent for three months prior to donation. This includes those in long-term, monogamous relationships.

That policy dates from the 1980s when a blanket blood donation ban was imposed on men who have sex with men to stop the spread of HIV through blood transfusion.

A lot has changed since then. Within just the last two years gay male blood donation has been allowed in the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Greece, Israel and most recently the US.

Instead of barring all gay men, and some bi and trans people, these countries assess all donors for their individual risk, gay and straight, cis and trans.

In the UK, Canada and the US all donors are asked if they have had anal sex with a new partner, or multiple partners, in the previous three months and are deferred if they say yes. In other words, instead of turning away all gay men, and some bi and trans folk, and allowing all heterosexuals through, like the current Australian policy, individual risk assessment screens out everyone who may be at risk.

Recent Canadian correspondence about UAP crash retrieval program "IndyWatch Feed National"

Introduction

Last year, I summarised then current Canadian interest in UAP. In a 22 May 2022 article titled "The Canadian Government and UAP: What do We Know?" and a 24 June 2022 post titled "Canada to Seek Information on Drones and UAP from the USA" I outlined what has come to light so far.

On 13 May2023, a copy of a letter appeared on Twitter, on an account named "Cambria." The letter was dated 22 March 2023, and was from Canadian politician Larry Maguire, addressed to the Canadian Minister of National Defence. The appearance of the letter at this time went largely unremarked upon. The same letter then resurfaced, and was discussed in Episode #22 of the Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp podcast "Weaponized." It gained massive exposure as a result of this podcast episode.

There is no Growth without Vulnerability "IndyWatch Feed National"

Vulnerability is often seen as a weakness, something to be avoided or hidden.
However, it is actually an essential component of growth and personal development. Without vulnerability, we cannot truly grow and reach our full potential.

When we talk about vulnerability, we are referring to the willingness to expose our true selves to others. This may include admitting our flaws, fears, and insecurities. It can be uncomfortable and even scary, but it is necessary if we want to grow and improve.

One of the reasons why vulnerability is so important is because it allows us to connect with others on a deeper level. When we are open and honest about our struggles and imperfections, it can help to break down barriers and create a sense of empathy and understanding. This, in turn, can lead to more meaningful and authentic relationships.

Another reason why vulnerability is essential for growth is because it helps us to learn from our mistakes. When we are willing to admit our failures and weaknesses, we can reflect on what went wrong and use that knowledge to improve ourselves. This can lead to personal growth and development, both in terms of our skills and our character.

However, vulnerability can be difficult. It requires us to step outside of our comfort zones and take risks. We may fear being judged or rejected by others, or worry that our vulnerabilities will be used against us. But the benefits of vulnerability far outweigh the risks.

Ultimately, there can be no growth without vulnerability. It is only by being willing to expose our true selves that we can truly connect with others and learn from our experiences. So the next time you feel hesitant to share your true self with others, remember that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a strength. And by embracing it, you can unlock your full potential for growth and personal development.

Bad trans: how to go beyond conditional acceptance "IndyWatch Feed National"

The dichotomy of good verses bad trans woman functions similarly to the dichotomy between the deserving and the undeserving poor. A good trans woman is a trans woman who has (or desires) a full medical transition, does her best to pass as cis, and is ultimately comfortable with being relegated to a limited, conceded form of womanhood.

(C) Bush and Dick Cheney (R) with the late Donald Rumsfeld (L)

J.G. Olsen / Financial Expositor

In a famous exchange between a high official at the court of George W. Bush and journalist Ron Susskind, the official later acknowledged to have been Karl Rove takes the journalist to task for working in the reality-based community. He defined that as believing that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality. Rove then asserted that this was no longer the way in which the world worked.

Were an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while youre studying that reality judiciously, as you will well act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and thats how things will sort out. Were historys actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do. (Ron Suskind, NYTimes Magazine, Oct. 17, 2004).

Mapping the motives of those who decide not to go there may be a way to begin breaking through this disastrous deadlock.

Multinationals push back against greater tax disclosure "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Joe Montero

Foreign multinationals operating in Australia are being driven mad by debate in the Senate over stronger tax transparency laws that apply to them. Its not that the discussion in the Senate is about putting an end to the corporate tax avoidance industry. it is about introducing a little more disclosure to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), and that the information should be available to the public.

This has been enough to prompt into action a large group of foreign based multinationals to go onto the offensive. Led by the giant conglomerate SwissHoldings, claiming to represent 62 Swiss based multinationals, and Roche, the German based pharmaceutical giant, have in effect, threatened an investment strike.

This is what SwissHoldings, which owns Nestle, Philip Morris, Johnson and Johnson, and Schindler, in its portfolio of companies, included the following in its submission.

We are deeply concerned about this measure and kindly ask to clarify how an Australian regime could obligate such public disclosure of non-Australian information of foreign groups including that of our member companies.

We kindly ask that at the very least, the enactment of any legislation is delayed such that our member companies can better assess its consequences on their entire global operations and their current and proposed future investments in Australia.

Make no mistake. The implied threat is real.

Similar submissions to the Senate by PwC and the other and the other three of the big four corporate advisory firms underlined the position. Deloitte explicitly warned Australia not to risk a push back.

The threat should be taken seriously.

Imagine the outcry if unions threatened to damage the economy if the government didnt do what they are told. There would be an outcry from politicians. Editorials up and down the country would be proclaiming a calamity if the threat is tolerated. But when the multinational corporations threaten, there is a wall of silence. This just goes to prove how much power these multinationals have in their hands.

Labor is in government and talking. But what is being proposed been to ensure an end to the corporate tax avoidance industry. now it is only about greater disclosure.

The present debate revol...

Was kann ICH eigentlich fr die ffentliche Sicherheit tun?

Das fragt ihr euch doch auch, oder?

Nun, hier ist eine kurze Durchsage des Premierministers von Australien dazu:

JOURNALIST: In your experience, do you think that Australians understand the challenges we really face when it comes to cyber security?

[...]PRIME MINISTER: [...] We need to mobilise the private sector, we need to mobilise as well consumers. We all have a responsibility. Simple things, turn your phone off every night for five minutes. For people watching this, do that every 24 hours, do it while youre brushing your teeth or whatever youre doing.

Gut, dass wir das mal geklrt haben.

Wisst ihr was?

Zelensky Says: No Elections in Ukraine Until War is Over "IndyWatch Feed National"

Yesterday Tucker Carlson took to the airwaves of Twitter to point out what may be the biggest hypocrisy of western nation-building yet. During the opening minutes of Episode 7 of Tucker on Twitter he points out that in their valiant war for democracy, the Western virtue-signalling war alliance is actually enabling dictatorship in NATO protectorate Ukraine.

Former Fox News presenter asks the fundamental question: why exactly are we now at war with Russia? The answer seems to be:

The war against Putin and for Ukraine is in fact a war for democracy.

Carlson goes on to point out the obvious, that, we are currently fighting a war for democracy on behalf of a leader who just casually announced hes happy to end democracy and our democracy and supporting leaders have no problem with that.

He rightly points out that during wartime politicians become more powerful, and thus they will always justify any extreme anti-democratic action at home as necessary. In the case of Ukraine, the Western-backed proxy war against Russia has allowed the Zelensky regime to suspend elections indefinitely, bring all media under state control, and shut down any independent media outlets which will not comply, shut down churches suspected of not supporting the war effort, silencing political opponents, and force-conscription of any male between the ages of 18 and 60 years old.

That means the collective West can now boast how its fighting a war for democracy to prop-up a leader who just canceled democracy.

House Speaker McCarthy Proudly Declares He Is Subservient to Trump "IndyWatch Feed National"

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA) is a powerful man at least in theory. He is the highest-ranking Republican in the land and third in line for the presidency. In reality, he is a pretty pathetic figure who knows his place, which is wherever former President Donald Trump wants him to be.

That was once again made abundantly clear on Tuesday when McCarthy dared to (briefly) step out of line. In an interview on CNBC, the speaker said something that is undeniably true when asked about Trumps chances of winning the 2024 election in light of his legal troubles.

Can he win that election? Yeah, he can, McCarthy said. The question is, is he the strongest to win the election? I dont know that answer.

Its tough to argue with that.

First of all, nobody knows the answer to that question. We have our own opinions about whether itll be great for the GOP to choose as its nominee a man whom likely independent voters describe as criminal, disgusting, asshole, crazy, and liar, but even we dont know.

So, unless McCarthy has a crystal ball stashed away somewhere, he cant definitively say who would be the strongest Republican in 2024.

In addition, he is also pretty dumb, so there is that.

But at least he was smart enough to realize that he really stepped in it by making this completely normal statement.

Because MAGA world lit him up.

Right-wing firebrand Steve Bannon vowed to go on a jihad against McCarthy for daring to say Trump may not be the best man for the job.

Laura Loomer, another prominent MAGA voice, had her own choice words for the speaker.

Another Mad Monk: Outside The AUKUS Echo Chamber "IndyWatch Feed National"

Skulking around underwater in wildly overpriced (and thus far imaginary) submarines is unlikely to persuade China to be reasonable and see things our way. Defence experts Mark Beeson and Vince Scappatura weigh in on the ongoing AUKUS debacle, and the latest Chicken-Little-sky-is-falling-in editorial crusade from the Murdoch press.

The Albanese government has committed Australia to the most expensive defence procurement in the countrys history. They are being offered enthusiastic support in this by the Coalition; unsurprising given that the purchase of nuclear-powered submarines and the creation of the AUKUS alliance were largely the Morrison governments initiatives.

This rare outbreak of bipartisanship and policy agreement is not universally shared, however; not that you would know it if youre unfortunate enough to get your news exclusively from the Murdoch press. As with its view of climate change, there is a consistent editorial line on AUKUS and critical voices are rarely even referred to, let alone heard.

We have personal experience of this having signed an open letter, along with over 100 other academics with expertise in defence and foreign policy, questioning the underlying strategic rationale of both AUKUS and the acquisition of submarines that will cost at least $368 billion, if and when they are ever delivered.

Paul Monk, the self-styled most versatile public intellectual in Australia in our time [Eds note: That is literally the claim Monk makes about himself on his own website while wearing a French beret and a high-neck sweater], was given a platform by The Australian to put us in our place. Needless to say, we havent been offered the right of reply.

Monks central argument, like that of the Albanese government, is that we need the alliance to deter Beijings escalating militarism. In this context, the system of collective security put in place by the US after 1945 has served Asia exceptionally well, Monk claims, as do the policymaking establishments of the US and Australia, of course.

Yet even if we ignore the conflicts in Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan, its plain that the overwhelming military superiority of the United States with or without its allies has conspicuously not deterred China from reassuming what its leaders see as its rightful place at...

How To Plant Propaganda: Putin has been weakened. Russia is crumbling. "IndyWatch Feed National"

Moon of Alabama June 27, 2023

On Sunday the U.S.Secretary of State went on four morning shows to play the same distinct melody over and over again:

Secretary Antony J. Blinken With Margaret Brennan of CBS Face the Nation

SECRETARY BLINKEN: And it was a direct challenge to Putins authority. So this raises profound questions. It shows real cracks. We cant speculate or know exactly where thats going to go. We do know that Putin has a lot more to answer for in the weeks and months ahead.

SECRETARY BLINKEN: These create more cracks in the Russian faade, and those cracks were already profound. Economically, militarily, its standing in the world all of those things have been dramatically diminished by Putins aggression against Ukraine. Hes managed to bring Europe together. Hes managed to bring NATO together. Hes managed to get Europe to move off of Russian energy. Hes managed to alienate Ukrainians and unite Ukraine at the same time. So across the board this has been a strategic failure. Now you introduce into that profound internal divisions, and there are lots of questions hes going to have to answer in the weeks ahead.

Secretary Antony J. Blinken With Chuck Todd of NBC Meet The Press

SECRETARY BLINKEN: So I think weve seen more cracks emerge in the Russian facade. It is too soon to tell exactly where they go and when they get there. But certainly we have all sorts of new questions that Putin is going to have to address in the weeks and months ahead.

This is just the latest chapter in a book of failure that Putin has written for himself and for Russia. Economically, militarily, its standing in the world all of things have plummeted. We have a united NATO thats stronger than ever before, a Europe that is weaning itself off of Russian energy, Ukraine that Putin has managed to alienate and unite at the same time. Now, with trouble brewing from within, this, as I said, just adds more questions that he has to find answers for.

Rolfe must answer to coroner in the inquiry into the death of Kumanjayi Walker "IndyWatch Feed National"

Kumanjayi Walkers family are a step closer to the truth behind his death, after the Northern Territory Court of Appeal today dismissed an appeal from Zachary Rolfe said the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA).

The judges decided in favour of NAAJAs legal argument that Rolfe cannot rely on a common law protection known as penalty privilege to dodge accountability and avoid answering questions in the coronial inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker.

On 9 November 2019, 19-year-old Warlpiri and Luritja teen Kumanjayi Walker was killed after being shot three times at close range by Zachary Rolfe in his home community of Yuendumu. Constable Rolfe was charged with murder after the shooting but acquitted at trial.

Alongside the family of Kumanjayi Walker, NAAJA appeared in the Court of Appeal. NAAJA successfully argued that in coronial inquests:

  • police officers cannot avoid answering questions for fear that it might expose them to internal disciplinary action; and

  • police officers are not entitled to be granted protection from disciplinary proceedings by the Coroner.

The coronial inquest into Kumanjayi Walkers death commenced back on 5 September 2022 and after many delays is scheduled to continue in October later this year.

Quote from Samara Fernandez-Brown, cousin of Kumanjayi Walker:
Although we are frustrated with the constant disruptions in our journey for answers and justice, we are happy with the decision made by the Court of Appeal. We believe in order to gain the truth about our loved ones death and move towards change, Rolfe must answer for his actions. There is no moving forward or justice without the full truth and accountability.

Quote from Nick Espie, Principal Legal Officer at the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA):
NAAJA welcomes this decision by the Court of Appeal, which is an important step towards holding police accountable for the deaths of Aboriginal people in their custody.

Kumanjayi Walkers families and communities searching for answers deserve to know the full truth as to how their loved one died. This decision means they are one step closer. The coronial process can now hear all relevant evidence and also consider community-led solutions for how to prevent future deaths in custody.

We stand with the family and community of Kumanjayi Walker, as they demand truth, accountability and justice through the coronial process.

Naurus Refugee Stain: Australias Continued Offshore Processing Regime "IndyWatch Feed National"

The last refugee, for now, has left the small, guano-producing state of Nauru.  For a decade, the Pacific Island state served as one of Australias offshore prisons for refugees and asylum seekers, a cruel deterrent to those daring to exercise their right to seek asylum via the sea.

Since July 2013, 3,127 people making the naval journey to Australia to seek sanctuary found themselves in carceral facilities in Nauru and Papua New Guineas Manus Island, told that they would never resettle on the Australian mainland.  Such persons were duly euphemised as transitory persons to be hurried on to third country destinations, if not returned to their country of origin, a form of vacant reasoning typical of a callous bureaucracy.

The wisdom here was that other countries would not only be more suitable for such persons, but keener candidates to pull their weight in terms of processing and accepting refugees.  For the Australian Commonwealth, outsourcing responsibilities from protecting citizens to shielding vulnerable arrivals from harm, has become a matter of dark habit.

Many of those remaining refugees held on the Australian mainland are the subjects of acute care, and all await transfer to third countries such as Canada under its private sponsorship program, the United States, New Zealand or other destinations.

In the meantime, 80 remain in PNG.  The situation there is marred by a fundamental legal peculiarity.  In October 2017, the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea found the Manus Island Centre to be both illegal and unconstitutional.  (PNG, unlike Australia, has a constitution prohibiting violations of personal liberty, even for non-PNG nationals.)  Its closure led to the removal of the detainees to various transition centres devoid of basic amenities, including water, electricity and medical support.

Both PNG and Australia proceeded to squabble over responsibility, despite the obvious fact that the latter exercises effective control over the facilities and those being held in them.  Emilie McDonnell of Human Rights Watch deems it indisputable that Australia bears primary responsibility for those in offshore detention under its policies and has an ongoing legal duty to find a durable solution.

The offshore concentration camp system established and prosecuted by respective federal go...

Most breweries and distilleries also offer individual or group rates, and some include food as part of the ticket price for the full experience.

Punitive busking policy on exhibition "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Under Councils draft busking policy, a group this large would be prohibited from performing and forced to perform as a four piece. They would also have to obtain $20M liability insurance and display photo ID. Among The Codgers lineup is trumpet player, Harry Angus from the Cat Empire. Photo supplied

Byron councillors have stepped back from endorsing a controversial new busking policy that would require local buskers to fork out for public liability insurance.

The policy is now open for public submissions, and contains a clause requiring that buskers provide documentary evidence that the applicant has obtained public liability insurance of a minimum $20 million.

However, no councillor moved a motion to amend staffs draft policy.

Instead, councillors removed their endorsement of the policy, and removed a line that stated it would automatically be adopted if no public submissions were received.

Regarding insurance, Independent Byron Councillor, Cate Coorey, told last weeks meeting that she could not find any other councils, including the City of Sydney, which had a similar requirement.

Its punitive, Cr Coorey said.

Were at a time now where many of the people busking on our streets are already strapped for cash, and if other Councils arent doing it, theres presumably some other mechanism to indemnify them or find a way to manage it.

Pushed by insurers

When questioned on the decision to include the insurance requirement in the policy, an unidentified staff member said it had been a requirement from Councils insurance officer and insurer.

United Nations investigation highlights cruel treatment of prisoners still in Guantanamo "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed from Victoria

A United Nations investigator, with a background in the Irish legal system has released a report that calls for proper treatment of prisoners still being held in the Guantanamo detention centre. Headed by Irish law expert Professor Fionnuala N Aolin, a team visited the prison where 30 men continue to be incarcerated without any date for release.

The now released 23 page report to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) says that these men have been subjected to ongoing cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment under international law. They have also been held without charge or trial for more than 25 years.

Professor Fionnuala N Aolin speaking on the Guantanamo report

The report was the result of direct investigation and speaking with the inmates.

I observed that after two decades of custody, the suffering of those detained is profound, and its ongoing, N Aolin said.

Details on the violation of international human rights law are in the report, and this includes but is not limited to the use of torture to extract information.

Professor N Aolin said there is evidence of deep psychological harm and distress including profound anxiety, helplessness, hopelessness, stress and depression, and dependency, and the care and facilities are not adequate to meet the complex and urgent mental and physical health issues of detainees which range from traumatic brain injuries to issues with bodily functions.

Although the firs such visit allowed, it remained conditional. Consequently, it was supportive of the Biden administration, despite to continuing imprisonment, The focus was on praising some minor changes, which were called significant improvements. The report did not question long-term detention without charg...

Food security report for Northern Rivers released "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Food security an issue for the Northern Rivers.

New research aimed to address local food security has found a lack of a co-ordinated government approach to disaster food security, with the burden of addressing food insecurity falling on the community.

The study, conducted by Plan C, UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures (UTS-ISF) and Wild Community, funded by the Northern Rivers Community Foundation, also found food insecurity is widespread across the nation, and affordable and healthy food is not always accessible, particularly for disadvantaged communities.

When approaching this complex problem, a food systems approach is necessary, says Fiona Berry, Research Principal at UTS-ISF.

The study provides ten key recommendations for creating a resilient and thriving circular food system in the Northern Rivers.

Seven of the ten are: enhanced food infrastructure; support for food produced in the region to be bought and sold locally; arable land protection; accessible food hubs; awareness and education on the benefits of local food; listening to traditional knowledge; and strong governance through a community-led regional food plan and policy council.

Plan C CEO, Dr Jean Renouf, says These recommendations echo the recently released CSIRO Reshaping Australian Food Systems 2050 Roadmap, and other initiatives happening elsewhere in regional Australia. This includes the Canberra Region Food Collaborative, Sydn...

Woman dies in house fire at Yamba "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators are assisting Police to determine the cause of a fatal house fire last night at Yamba.

Just after 9pm, fire crews from Yamba, Maclean and Grafton were dispatched to the single-level house, within a retirement village in Orion Drive.

As firefighters arrived, they saw a woman, believed to be 73-years-old, suffering smoke inhalation, unconscious outside her home.

NSW Ambulance paramedics performed CPR on the woman as fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, attacked the blaze.

The resident was unable to be revived and died a short time later. She is yet to be formally identified.

The fire was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW, however it sustained extensive damage.

Police sealed off the scene for analysis today by FRNSWs Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU).

Its the fourth fatal residential fire in NSW this winter.

FRNSW continues to urge the public to ensure all homes are fitted with working smoke alarms.

It is also crucial that households develop a home escape plan in case of fire.

Anyone requiring a home safety visit by their local fire crews can book an inspection via the FRNSW website: https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=9316

Firefighters will visit your home, provide important advice and fit a smoke alarm, free of charge, if necessary.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.

As one Brazilian state takes up carbon trading, others may fall for the illusion "IndyWatch Feed National"

Its a fiercely contested question: Do carbon offsets provide a solution to curbing greenhouse gas emissions? For many experts, the answer is a resounding no. But that hasnt stopped the carbon trade from booming as more countries and companies look for ways to meet international targets for global carbon reductions. The Brazilian state of Tocantins is the latest to venture into the carbon market with a recent deal with Swiss oil-trading giant Mercuria. The 10-year forest carbon credit purchase agreement means that Tocantins can sell credits to Mercuria once theyve been verified by the U.N.s jurisdictional REDD+ framework (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation). Tocantins, a state the size of the United Kingdom, is made up of Cerrado savanna (87%) and Amazon Rainforest (13%). A combination of environmental policies and reinforcement efforts allowed the state to slash deforestation and reduce its carbon emissions by 65 million metric tons between 2016 and 2020, a figure officially recognized by the federal government through the National Commission for REDD+, according to Marcello Lelis, the state secretary for the environment and water resources. Lelis told Mongabay by phone that Tocantins has already sold 40 million metric tons of these past credits to Mercuria as well as credits the state could produce by 2030. Credits generated between 2016 and 2032 could be worth up to $2 billion, state environmental official Marli Santos told Reuters. Thats good news for Tocantins. Deforestation rates across the state are lower than pre-2016 levels despite slight increases in theThis article was originally published on Mongabay

How To Plant Propaganda: "Putin has been weakened. Russia is crumbling."

We do know that Putin has a lot more to answer for in the weeks and months ahead.
...

SECRETARY BLINKEN: ... So I think weve seen more cracks emerge in the Russian facade. It is too soon to tell exactly where they go and when they get there. But certainly we have all sorts of new questions that Putin is going to have to address in the weeks and months ahead.

This is just the latest chapter in a book of failure that Puti...

Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie- Hide your Magic! "IndyWatch Feed National"

Both Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie were popular television programs in the 1960s that revolved around the lives of magical women who concealed their powers to conform to societal expectations and maintain harmonious relationships with their male counterparts. While these shows featured female protagonists with supernatural abilities, they ultimately reinforced traditional gender roles and presented a narrative where women subjugated their power to their husbands or masters.

In Bewitched, the main character, Samantha Stephens, is a witch who marries a mortal man, Darrin. Samantha possesses extraordinary magical abilities but agrees to live as a normal housewife, concealing her powers to avoid conflict in her marriage. The show frequently depicted Samantha using her magic to solve everyday problems discreetly, often with comedic effect. However, her magical abilities were consistently presented as secondary to Darrins desires and wishes. Despite Samanthas intelligence and capability, she often deferred to Darrins decisions and allowed him to take the lead, reinforcing the idea that women should prioritize their husbands happiness and desires over their own.

Similarly, I Dream of Jeannie centered around the character of Jeannie, a beautiful and powerful genie who falls in love with an astronaut named Tony Nelson. Jeannie, like Samantha, possesses incredible magical abilities that could have easily solved any problem. However, she willingly suppresses her powers and subjugates herself to Tonys desires. Jeannies role is largely defined by her desire to please Tony and make him happy, often to the detriment of her own agency and independence.

Both shows can be seen as examples of how female characters with immense power were portrayed in a way that reinforced traditional gender roles and societal expectations. Instead of embracing and celebrating their strength and magic, the female protagonists chose to hide their true selves and subjugate their power to their male partners. These narratives perpetuated the idea that womens strength and magic should be secondary to mens desires and aspirations, playing into gender stereotypes that portrayed men as superior and women as submissive.

Its important to note that these shows were products of their time and reflected the social and cultural attitudes prevalent in the 1960s. While they might not be considered feminist representations of womens strength and empowerment by todays standards, they still hold cultural significance and provide insight into the historical context of womens roles in media during that era

Supporting US proxies not in Australias national interests "IndyWatch Feed National"

By Lucas Leiroz | June 27, 2023

Pro-Western countries continue to join the irresponsible wave of arming Ukraine. On June 26, the Australian government announced a new package of military aid to the Kiev regime, showing the countrys real willingness to follow NATOs guidelines against Russia. The measure does not serve Australias actual interests but reflects the submissive status of the local government to Western partners.

The Australian Government will provide a new $110 million assistance package to Ukraine () This package responds to Ukraines requests for vehicles and ammunition () In addition, Australia will extend duty-free access for goods imported from Ukraine for a further 12 months, an Australian governments statement reads.

The mentioned value of 110 million AUD is equivalent to around 74 million dollars. Among the equipment supplied, there are 70 military vehicles, including: 28 M113 armored vehicles, 14 special operations vehicles, 28 MAN 40M medium trucks and 14 trailers, and 105mm artillery ammunition.

With this, Australian spending on aid to Ukraine amounts to 790 million dollars US$ 610 million of which are specifically used for military assistance. While this spending is considerably less than that made by the US and other NATOs powers, the numbers remain surprising given that, unlike its Western partners, Australia is not a key military power and has a smaller defense budget.

In fact, helping Ukraine is absolutely irrational for a country like Australia. Washington has a clear interest in attacking Russia, which shows the reasons for helping Kiev. In the same sense, although supporting the regime is not strategically beneficial for Europeans, these states can at least use as a justification some concern with the stability of continental security, fearing an expansion of the Russian operation.

But as far as Australia is concerned, there is no possible justification. The country has no reason to follow a foreign policy of aggression against Russia, nor is it geographically located on the Eurasian continent to fear that the conflict will physically affect it. Canberra is helping Kiev just because it is committed to Western geopolitical interests, even if these interests are not shared by the Australian people.

In addition, it is necessary to remember that Ukraine is not the only US proxy that Au...

How High Can Bitcoin Price Rise Due To Spot ETFs? Running The Numbers "IndyWatch Feed National"

The recent Bitcoin rally has led to speculation that the price could rise further with the introduction of spot ETFs. The arrival of ETFs, especially from reputable companies such as BlackRock and Fidelity, could boost institutional investor confidence and lead to a surge in the Bitcoin price. The one million dollar question, however, is: how high? Clues to answering this question can come from various metrics and data.

One such data point was provided yesterday by CoinShares Chief Strategy Officer Meltem Demirors via Twitter. As she writes, the Bitcoin spot ETF news is not the only story. Many of the largest financial institutions in the US are currently actively working to provide access to BTC and more. In total, there are more than $27 trillion in client assets waiting on the sidelines.

Bitcoin AUM of institutions

With BlackRock, the worlds largest asset manager has filed a Bitcoin ETF application. Rumour has it that the worlds number three, Fidelity Investments, is also flirting with a Bitcoin ETF. Bitcoin ETF applications from Invesco and WisdomTree (both top 10 ETFs) are a fact.

How High Can Bitcoin Rise? All-Time High? Quadruple?

If just a fraction of the $27 trillion in client money managed by the largest asset managers were to go into Bitcoin spot ETFs, the impact on price would be gigantic. Just 1% would amount to over $270 billion (rather more because not all Bitcoin ETF applicants are included in the chart). In comparison, the Bitcoin market cap is currently $590 billion.

As NewsBTC reported two weeks ago, the performance of the gold price after the first gold ETF in November 2004 could also be a metric that provides a glimpse into the future. The launch of the first gold ETFs led to a fabulous gold rally. While the price of gold was still at $400 at the time of approval, it reached $600 in 2006 and $800 in 2008. Seven years after approval, in 2011, gold reached its preliminary high of almost $2,000 (+359%).

Battle for the youth barista crown "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Like a well-made latte, the first ever North Coast Junior Barista Championship burst into being with flavour and buzz on June 22.

St Johns College Woodlawn took out the inaugural team title with a series of fantastically frothy offerings that impressed the judges at the Byron Youth Service where the event was held.

Coffee in the Northern Rivers is in good hands, said competition judge Drew McGovern, who is also Secretary of the Australian Grown Coffee Association.

All coffees presented to me were of a commercial standard.

North Coast Community College trained more than 150 students aged 15-18 from 12 local flood-impacted high schools who completed the Nationally Recognised Barista Training.

The training was part of the NGO Flood Support Program, for non-government organisations funded by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.

Four members of each teams had 15 minutes to make four coffee varieties which were examined on appearance, taste, temperature, micro foam/crema , cleanliness and teamwork.

Contributing to the high-octane occasion was live music performed by students and a nearly all-in crowd participation joining in on the set steps to be filmed for the global Jerusalema dance challenge.

The community colleges CEO, Ted Nabung, said the outcome was a great success supported by numerous schools, local businesses and the community.

Looking ahead, we want to commit to staging the 2024 contest, Mr Nabung said.

We believe it could be bigger and better, but its going to need similar accessible funds to train secondary students and broader sponsorship for the community event.

Profits Not Labour Costs Are Driving Inflation: The Australia Institute Was Right "IndyWatch Feed National"

Mortgage holders were dealt another blow recently when the Reserve Bank of Australia increased interest rates by 25 basis points, to an 11-year high. In response, the satirical online publication The Shovel quipped, RBA cleverly responds to business-driven inflation by increasing struggling familys mortgage by $150 a month.

It continued: When big businesses are pushing up prices and announcing record profits, the best way to respond is to push Julie and Trevor Smith from Werribee to the brink of bankruptcy.

Amusing, at least upon first reading. But it hits a little too close to home for hundreds of thousands of working people who get by paycheck to paycheck. New data shows prices rose 6.8 per cent for the year to April, well outside of the RBAs target band of two to three per cent. Housing is increasingly unaffordable in most of the major cities. Food costs have risen by nearly eight per cent, and if you drive to work good luck at the bowser.

But who should we blame for the current inflation crunch? The business lobby has been telling us that its a multifaceted problem driven by a mix of supply shock and demand-side pressures.

Yes, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in escalating fuel and agricultural prices. And a combination of natural disasters and delays in transporting goods and services have caused prices to rise globally. In addition, the aptly dubbed wage-price spiral theory has roared back into vogue; according to the Chamber of Commerce, a 5.75 per cent pay rise granted from July 1st to the lowest paid workers consigns Australia to high inflation.

Yet theres growing evidence to suggest that strategically inflated prices in other terms, corporate profiteering or price gouging is a leading cause of high inflation.

Research published by Dr Jim Stanford from the Australia Institute, and cited by New Matilda, notes that corporate profits, not wages, are a major driver of the countrys high inflation.

The progressive think tank argues that business profits account for 69 per cent of inflation above the RBAs target band, calling it a profit-price spiral. And the figures are telling earnings results posted by supermarkets, mining and energy companies, banks, and the national airline are skyrocketing.

In total, Stanford identified that to the Septemb...

The Prestige of Power And Its Loss "IndyWatch Feed National"

You cannot go to war against a clown and lose. There is no coming back for Russia after that. Mass unemployment and runaway inflation, civil war, economic depression, state collapse, all those tragedies a nation can overcome in time, but not that. Putin needs to wrap this up quickly, before the clown can have his last laugh.

An excerpt from, "The Meaning of Prestige" By Harold Nicolson, The Atlantic, July 1937:

The cynic at this stage will exclaim: But you are raising a false issue. It is obvious, and Hitler and Mussolini have proved it, that prestige is based upon power alone. However high may be your reputation, unless you also possess power you have no prestige. Conversely, however low your reputation may be, so long as you have sufficient power, then prestige follows inevitably. In fact power and prestige are synonymous terms.

The answer to that assertion is that power and prestige are not synonymous, since, although you cannot acquire prestige without power, yet you cannot retain prestige without reputation. Moreover, a prestige which contains a high percentage of reputation is able to withstand a loss of power; whereas even a temporary decline in power will destroy a prestige which is devoid of reputation. For instance, at the time of the Abyssinian episode, we exposed to the world a flagrant decline in our power, yet our prestige (much to our surprise) remained almost undamaged; whereas it is inconceivable that any State whose prestige was based on power alone could have survived a similar discomfiture. Again, we maintain our rule over subject peoples not by the employment of power so much as by the general confidence inspired by reputation. The problem is not, therefore, one of power alone; it is a problem of the proportions in which power and reputation should be mixed.

. . .

Let me take another and more recent instance. On January 1, 1907, Sir Eyre Crowe, at that time head of the Western Department of the Foreign Office, wrote a memorandum regarding the foundations of B...

Push For First Nations Childrens Commissioner Grows, With Prominent NZ Visit "IndyWatch Feed National"

New Zealands Childrens Commissioner will visit Darwin later this year amid a growing push for Australia to appoint its own Commissioner to oversee the welfare of, and government interactions with, Australias First Nations children.

SNAICC23 the 10th National Conference for the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care will be held in Darwin in early September. Its by far the largest event of its kind on the annual calendar, with more than 1,000 people expected to attend.

One of those will be Judge Frances Eivers, a Ngti Maniapoto woman from Waikato and a passionate advocate for First Nations children.

A former family court judge and criminal lawyer, Judge Eivers has held the role of New Zealands Childrens Commissioner since November 2021. She believes it is important to have powerful champions for Indigenous children and has been outspoken about closing care and protection units and improving conditions for children in care.

My vision as Childrens Commissioner has always been kia kuru pounamu te rongo that all children live their best lives, Judge Eivers said. Im sure thats a vision that all Indigenous people aspire to, and I look forward to sharing some of the ways I have advocated for our mokopuna in Aotearoa.

Im especially interested to learn more about the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people and the call for a First Nations Commissioner to serve them.

This has been about calling for Mori approaches to caring for children, within the context of their close and wider family groups. Integral to this work is listening to and amplifying the voices of young people.

Judge Eivers has served as Childrens Commissioner of New Zealand since 2021. From July 1, the model expands to include a Board of up to six Commissioners, on which Judge Eivers will serve. Before being appointed Commissioner, she was a Judge in the District Court in Manukau, working extensively with mokopuna (children) in the court system. Judge Eivers has worked as a lawyer in Auckland, Whakatne, London and Tauranga.

Chair of SNAICC and prominent human rights advocate, Muriel Bamblett.

SNAICC Chairperson, Muriel Bamblett said New Zealands experience had a great deal of relevance to Australia.

Notes on O'Dell's THUNDER ROLLING IN THE MOUNTAINS "IndyWatch Feed National"

Over the last few years I've had several questions from parents and teachers about Scott O'Dell's Thunder Rolling in the Mountains. Today (June 20th, 2023) I am going to start reading it and making notes as I do.

I think it originally came out from Houghton Mifflin in 1992. O'Dell is listed as the first author. The second author is Elizabeth Hall. He died in 1989. He was married to Hall. The "Foreword" is by Hall. She writes that
A few years earlier we had followed the trail taken in 1877 by Chief Joseph and his valiant band [...]. From that trip, from the recollections of Nez Perce and U.S. Army personnel, from the writings of historians, and from Scott's instructions and musings about the story, I have completed the manuscript as Scott had asked me to do. Most of the characters are based on actual Nez Perce, and most of their words and deeds are drawn from recollections of survivors."
She writes that these sources are essential to the book:
  • Two eyewitness accounts compiled by Lucullus V. McWhorter: Yellow Wolf: His Own Story (the recollections of Chief Joseph's nephew) and Hear Me, My Chiefs! (based on eyewitness accounts of both sides)
  • Chief Joseph's Own Story told on his trip to Washington DC in 1897
She writes that these books were helpful:
  • Merrill Beal's "I Will Fight No More Forever": Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce War
  • Helen Addison Howard's Saga of Chief Joseph
  • Arthur Josephy Jr.'s The Nez Perce Indians and the Opening of the Northwest
I'm glad that she includes her sources. But, questions I pose as I read that info:
  • Who is Lucullus V. McWhorter? It sounds like he spoke with a Nez Perce person. When did that happen? Did the Nez Perce person speak English? Did McWhorter speak Nimipuutimt (the language the Nez Perce people speak). If the answer to those questions is no, there was likely a translator.
  • Hall says they used Chief Joseph's Own Story as a key source. The subtitle for that source is "Told by him on his trip to Washington, D.C., in 1897*". The footnote for the asterisk says "Chief Joseph's story is presented here not as a matter of historic record or as evidence in the controversy over the facts in connection with the treaty of 1855, but to give an impression of the man." Who wrote that footnote? When I look for information about that account and footnote, what will I find? (Also noting here that the second paragraph of his account says his name is...

Byron Council calls for community meeting to explain Resilient Homes fiasco "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Byron Council has called for an urgent meeting with the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC), Council staff and members of local community organisations to clarify the confusion and address the concerns created by the state governments Resilient Homes program.

The release of the first tranche of the program earlier this month caused widespread consternation in the community as it involved a significant reduction in what was originally promised.

Among the expressions of anger and concern was a submission from the Mullumbimby Residents Association, which included an urgent request for a meeting with Byron Council and the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC).

Councillors unanimously supported that demand in a motion at last weeks Council meeting.

Should the meeting go ahead, it would seek to clarify the schemes eligibility criteria and how the mapping released by NRRC might be interpreted by individual residents who have applied for support.

There would also be a discussion about the processing of individual requests, including the exceptional circumstances procedure and appeal procedure.

Most of Australia is not happy with the nations direction "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Jim Hayes

The latest Guardian Essential poll pinpointed some telling truths about how Australians feel about where Australia is heading and how our political leaders are responding to the challenges of the day. This is just one poll, of course, and one poll can never tell the whole truth.

But this one does make sense. It represents what many polls have been saying and other evidence is backing. What is notable about this poll, is the extent to which the alienation of our political leaders from society stands now.

Being the Prime Minister, means that Anthony Albanese has seen his approval fall to the lowest point since the 2022 election. The opinion is that he is not doing enough to tackle the high cost of rentals (68 percent), and especially the overall rising cost of living (75 percent).

About Australia not going in the right direction overall. Well, the poll shows that the opinion of 47 percent of Australia believes this is the wrong one. Another 21 percent are unsure. Only 38 percent believe the direction is the right one. This is important. It tells us that Australia is pessimistic about the future.

Remembering that towards the end of the Morrison government, 40 percent believed Australia was then heading in the right direction puts the present situation into some context. The number was a low number then and it is even lower today.

Add to this that majority (51 percent) now believes that not enough is being done about the environment. Preoccupation with concern over bread-and-butter economic issues hasnt sent this in the other direction.

Labor is in the firing line by virtue of being in government. they are perceived as failing to deliver enough on what the community expected. This is cold comfort for the Coalition. Their leader, Peter Dutton, remains somewhat more unpopular, with only 27 percent seeing him in a positive light.

But over focus on personalities, and even political parties, detracts from hat is even more important. Australia is losing faith in the whole set up. This poll and other evidenceshows the younger the person, the more likely he or she will feel alienated.

The Essential Poll does not try to explain why Australia feels the way, and consequently it avoids some critical matters. especially that the institutions that our political leaders operate in do does not meet the needs of the day. Chief...

Restoring trust in politics "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Question Time should be abolished. Its corrosive effect on our democracy was exposed yet again last week the last sitting week before the long winter break.

Question Time was supposed to increase trust in the institution of Parliament by keeping the executive government accountable. But it has now been reduced to a scripted pantomime.

Oppositions pose questions like a prosecutor at a trial. They are not to elicit information from the person being questioned. They are not posed for the voters or jurors to listen to the answer. Rather they are structured as a narrative as if the questions themselves are the facts for the voters or jurors to accept.

You stole a gun on 23 June, didnt you? You used it to rob the XYZ bank on 24 June, didnt you?

The Voice will give Indigenous people say over tax policy, wont it? It will force the government to take into account Indigenous views on military bases, wont it?

And so on only interspersed by meaningless Dorothy Dix questions from the Government side.

That is what happened last week. That is what happens most weeks.

It has two effects: it engenders distrust for and contempt of Parliament and other political institutions and it causes some voters to fall for the concocted narrative created by the questions.

Dorothy Dix, by the way, was the pen name of a highly paid US syndicated advice columnist who was reputed to craft her own questions and then answer them.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, however, got it exactly the wrong way around when asserting through a question that, if the Voice referendum passed, it would be able to influence where military bases were placed.

It disclosed his ignorance of the law and the Constitution. Lets take the example of a military base proposed for land over which an Indigenous group of people had native title. Lets say the Voice had passed. There would be a consultative process and agreement reached.

On the other hand, lets say the Voice had not passed. Indigenous people would be rightly outraged and utterly uncooperative in any process. They would rightly assert their native title to block the base. The High Court held in the...

Major Breakthrough: How Botox enters brain cells, a discovery that could save lives "IndyWatch Feed National"

A groundbreaking study led by distinguished researchers from the University of Queensland has unveiled new insights about the complex mechanism through which Botox infiltrates brain cells. The profound findings, published in The EMBO Journal, are set to have a substantial impact on the medical and cosmetic industries and potentially pioneer new treatments for botulism.

Botox: A Multifaceted Tool from Bacterial Origins to Beauty Regimes

The team spearheaded by Professor Frederic Meunier and Dr. Merja Joensuu from the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland, successfully pinpointed the specific molecular pathway through which the botulinum neurotoxin type-A, popularly known as Botox, infiltrates neurons.

A compound released by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, Botox has a long and intriguing history. Its initial medical application was in the treatment of strabismus, a condition characterized by misalignment of the eyes. Over time, its therapeutic applications expanded to include treatments for spasms, migraines, and even excessive sweating as documented by the Mayo Clinic and Hopkins Medicine.

Interestingly, Botoxs most widely recognized use today is in the cosmetic industry, where its employed to smooth wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. However, the benefits of Botox go beyond the aesthetic realm. When deployed medically, Botox injections can provide various health benefits, such as:

  • Alleviating chronic migraines: Regular Botox treatments can decrease the frequency of migraine attacks.
  • Reducing hyperhidrosis: Botox can be used to manage excessive sweating.
  • Treating muscle spasticity: Botox injections can relax muscles and improve mobility.
  • Managing eye conditions: Early use of Botox was to address strabismus and blepharospasm (abnormal contraction of the eyelid muscles).
  • Reducing overactive bladder symptoms: Botox has shown positive results in controlling urinary incontinence.

However, despite its numerous benefits, its critical to note that when botulinum toxin is released in large quantities by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, it can cause the potentially lethal disease botulism.

Lightning kills 10 as pre-monsoon rains lash Pakistan "IndyWatch Feed National"

Lightning strikes across Pakistan's eastern Punjab province killed at least 10 people, officials said, as heavy pre-monsoon rains lashed the region. The strikes on Sunday mainly took place in the Sialkot and Sheikhupura districts of Punjab. Lightning strikes are frequent across Pakistan, especially in Punjab's mountainous areas and plains. The Pakistan Meteorological Department said more rains were expected this week, bringing some respite from the ongoing heatwave. The National Disaster Management Authority warned the ongoing rains could trigger flash flooding. Every year, many areas of Pakistan struggle with the annual monsoons, drawing criticism for poor government planning. The season runs from July through September. Last summer, floods triggered by rains killed 1739 people across Pakistan. The deluge displaced about eight million people and caused $US30 billion ($A45 billion) in losses. Report Back from Antifascist Mobilization in Lynnwood, Washington "IndyWatch Feed National"

If you thought antifa was gone from Seattle and neighboring communities, you were wrong. On Saturday, June 17th, some 75+ local anarchists and community members convened on the plaza of the Lynnwood Event Center to face off against TERFs and the local III%, a far-Right militia.

A younger, newer organizer first identified the problem when Sovereign Women Speak (SWS) posted a flyer about a protest to support a spa that had been taken to the Seattle District Court and received a ruling denying them the ability to continue its discriminatory practice of refusing access to transwomen. That organizer reached out to other young organizers that had previously organized large and successful marches for trans lives in the last few months. Together, they made contact with various allies and accomplices to coordinate a counter-protest. Social media was blasted with flyers and printouts were posted all over Lynnwood and neighboring area all within about a week. With such short notice, and during Pride month when so many antifascists are committed to supporting non-corporate Pride events to help keep people safe, it was an impressive feat for these young up and comers.

SWS has a sordid local history in the Pacific Northwest, known for their proud trans exclusionist activities and propaganda. This event would not be the first time they actively recruited III% to attend and speak at their rally they did this in Port Townsend last September, too. SWS advocates for trans women to be forced into mens prisons where they face terrible violence, that gender affirming surgery is a myth, that all trans people and drag queens are groomers, and so on. Theyre not the brightest crayons in the box they originally posted a flyer and address for the wrong spa location and had to change it before it gained traction.

Apparently, ASEAN is about to lose one of its most important elements, the Philippines "IndyWatch Feed National"

ASEAN is about to lose one the Philippines

Cooperation of Philippines with the USA and its closest Asia-Pacific region allies is rapidly growing.

And just as the international community barely got used to the March news about the number of bases in the Philippines which the USA has access to increasing to nine, as well as about the possibility of Japan and Australia fully joining the military cooperation with the Philippines, on May 31 the Japanese media reported that the defense ministers of Japan, the USA, Australia and the Philippines will hold four-party negotiations at the international forum on security, the Shangri-La Dialogue, scheduled for June 2-4 this year, stressing that the discussion will focus on the problems of regional security and the development of cooperation.

Already on June 1, the Philippine Coast Guard announced the first-ever trilateral exercise to be conducted by the United States, Japan and the Philippines off the coast of the Philippines. The Japanese and the US Coast Guards sent one ship each, and four ships from the Philippines will be involved in the exercise. It is stressed that this exercise, which will include, in particular, maneuvering, operative communication installation, and photographing within scenarios of suspected pirate vessels interception, should allegedly improve coordination between the coastguards of the three states.

These recent developments testify to, so to speak, the success of Washingtons policy, assisted by its allies, on reduction of the influence (or even elimination, in the best case for the United States) of one of the most important organizations for stability in the Asia-Pacific region ASEAN. Obviously the Philippines are no longer a neutral, independent state in the current configuration of its foreign military-political relations as stipulated in the ASEAN basic agreements. In fact the US, with the rise of the Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to power in Manila to replace the restive and unyielding Rodrigo Duterte, got and is making the most of the opportunity to restore the Philippines to the role of its closest ally in the region, the way it was d...

Indias maritime security concerns from Cocos Islands to the Coco Islands "IndyWatch Feed National"

Indias maritime security concerns from Cocos Islands to the Coco Islands first shown on Taazakhabar News

India's maritime security concerns - from Cocos Islands to the Coco Islands

In this article, an attempt will be made to bring out some salient aspects of the Indian maritime security concerns and the wide swath that it covers from the Cocos Islands of Australia to the Coco Islands of Myanmar.

Cocos Islands of Australia

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, approximately midway between Australia and Sri Lanka and relatively close to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Historically, the islands have been known as the Cocos Islands or the Keeling Islands. The islands are located about 2,770 kilometres northwest of Perth, Western Australia. The largest island in the territory is West Island, located in the South Keeling Atoll. The islands economy is based on tourism, fishing, and coconut production.

India and Australia have a growing strategic relationship, and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are vital. The islands are in the Indian Ocean, about halfway between India and Australia, about 2591 km from Andamans, and they offer both countries significant strategic advantages. Several shipping lanes pass near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The most important of these is the Malacca Strait, one of the worlds busiest shipping lanes. The Malacca Strait connects the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, and it is used by ships carryin...

Editor wont investigate data concerns about paper linking anti-prostitution laws to increased rape "IndyWatch Feed National"

After reading an economics paper that claimed to document an increase in the rate of rape in European countries following the passage of prostitution bans, a data scientist had questions.

The scientist, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent a detailed email to an editor of the Journal of Law and Economics, which had published the paper last November, outlining concerns about the data and methods the authors used.

Among them: the historical rates of rape recorded in the paper did not match the values in the official sources the authors said they used. In other cases, data that were available from the official sources were missing in the paper, the researchers didnt incorporate all the data they had collected into their model, and a variable was coded inconsistently, the data scientist wrote. (Weve made the full critique available here.)

Given the consequences the conclusions of the article could have for people in the sex industry, the data scientist wrote, I hope that someone takes this very seriously and looks into it the [sic] validity of the analysis and the data they used.

In response, Sam Peltzman, an editor of the journal and a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Chicagos Booth School of Business, instructed the data scientist to contact the authors of the article:

The email raises serious questions but without any specific request. Your questions can better be answered by the authors than editors who, as you must know, cannot give each submission the kind of careful attention reflected in your email. Accordingly, we ask that you contact the authors directly if you have not already done so.

If you mean the email as a prologue to a critique, I am happy to discuss our relevant policies or any other question about our editorial process.

Lismore Local Planning Panel is no more "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Lismore City Council has just announced that the controversial Planning Panel has been disbanded and that planning powers will be returned to Lismore Councillors.

Mayor Steve Krieg has welcomed the NSW Governments decision to disband the Lismore Local Planning Panel. I would like to thank the Minister for taking on board Councils resolution at the March Ordinary meeting that councillors did not need assistance in undertaking our role as the consent authority.

I would also like to thank our State Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin who actively lobbied the Minister on Councils behalf.

Minister for Planning Paul Scully wrote to the Mayor on Friday to advise his decision after recent visits to the Northern Rivers.

Speeding up development

Earlier in the year, the NSW Government had announced it would establish the Lismore Local Planning Panel to speed up development in Lismore after the February 2022 natural disaster.

However, at the March Ordinary Meeting, councillors passed a motion that they had never asked for assistance, are not in need of assistance and that councillors have little to no impact in relation to planning delays, since we have no direct involvement in operational matters, and rarely call any matters up for consideration by councillors.

The community will see no change as Councils Planning team have continued to undertake the approval of development applications. This will mean Councillors can again call up specific development applications for Councils decision.

The Local Planning Panel had yet to met, with the first meeting scheduled for 28 June 2023.

Get your dogs and cats desexed: AWF "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

National Desexing Month starts next week and runs to the end of July. Each year this event aims to encourage desexing of dogs and cats before the spring breeding season.

President of the Animal Welfare League, North Coast Branch, Alana Crangle told The Echo, The National Desexing Network approaches vets and organisations throughout Australia to promote desexing by offering discounted prices for the month to all pet owners.

She says, Animal Welfare League NSW North Coast Branch (AWL) contacts all veterinary clinics in our region, encouraging them to participate.

A desexed female dog or cat will live a healthier life owing to not breeding numerous litters throughout their lives, and a desexed male dog or cat is less likely to be injured in fighting over territory.

For Centrelink or DVA cardholders, AWL can assist towards the cost of desexing by offering a voucher to the value of $50 for cats and $100 for dogs during October through to May each year.

AWL supports responsible pet ownership, including desexing, microchipping, collars, ID tags, and cats being kept inside at night to protect our native wildlife, and encourages owners to contain their cats by building a catio attached to their homes. Anyone who adopts from us does not have to pay a registration fee.

To find out more visit them at the shelter at 124 Dalley St, Mullum or on Facebook @AWLNSWNorthCoast, or call them on 0436 845 542.

The referendum proposal became law on 19 June when it was passed in the Senate: 52 for, 19 against.

In the 1967 referendum, Section 51 of the 1901 Australian Constitution was altered so that Indigenous people were, for the first time, recognised as people of any race for whom is deemed necessary to make special laws by deleting other than the aboriginal race in any State.

Section 127 was removed altogether. It stated that Aborigines not to be counted in reckoning population. Over 90 per cent supported the amendment. There wasnt a No option.

Although then regarded as fully fledged citizens Indigenous representation in our parliaments did not follow.

Why do we need a Voice today?

Some people, who are wondering now why the proposed Voice would be desirable, are saying 11 Indigenous people are actually parliam...

Antony Loewenstein has brought a book to a gunfight "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

My new book, The Palestine Laboratory, was positively reviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age on the weekend in a piece written by Michael Ruffles:

Antony Loewenstein has brought a book to a gunfight, taking on Israels enormous and expanding military-industrial complex and invasive cyber spy operations with the low-tech tool of words on paper.

In the right hands, theres nothing more powerful or incendiary than words and Loewenstein mounts a full-scale attack. He accuses Israel of not only running an apartheid state but profiting from the tools used to oppress millions, and selling them to some of the worlds more murderous despots and least scrupulous governments.

The flood community youre gonna hear them ROR "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Lismore pop-up info graphic from the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation Facebook page.

UPDATE: Monday, 26 June, 10.25am

A member of ROR said they contacted the Lismore pop-up to make and appointment and were told that the office would be closed on Friday.

When The Echo rang the 1-800 number for the Resilient Homes Program info hub, we were told that there were telephone appointments for Friday but they were unsure if the office would be open or not.

ROR still plans to meet at the office on Friday at 4pm.

As the time between the floods and the future widens and number of people who are still homeless or struggling to keep their home, does not diminish, the communitys faith in the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) grows weaker and people want answers.

With a focus on getting some of those answers, flood survivors and concerned community members from around the Northern Rivers will gather on Friday the new NRRC Pop-Up Homeowner office in Lismore to once again share their practical visions and air their increasing frustrations with the disaster corp....

Lismore launches Housing Grant program on July 1 "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Quick off the mark, Lismore City Council had made it official after voting on the issues less than a week ago and will launch a $1.2 million Lismore Housing Grant program on 1 July.

The grants will provide $15,000 to eligible landowners to stimulate the construction of new affordable housing.

Lismore Mayor Steve Krieg said a total of 80 grants will be available on a first-come-first served basis until such time as a pool of the available funds are fully committed.

Housing the responsibility of State Government

Affordable housing is really the responsibility of the State Government, however Council did receive some Federal Government funding that must be utilised to facilitate new affordable housing opportunities.

The Lismore Housing Grant program will go some way easing the housing crisis to help our community, and importantly is also open to flood-affected residents who want to relocate their home within the Lismore Local Government Area.

Six eligibility criteria

The program has six eligibility criteria that are designed to create more diverse and affordable housing options for the Lismore community.

The application form is now available on Councils website, as well as a factsheet detailing
eligibility. Simply go to www.lismore.nsw.gov.au

The application can only be considered once a Development Application (DA), Complying Development Certificate (CDC) or a Section 68 Application has been lodged on the NSW Planning Portal.

Council will then assess the application with the determination made within 30 days. Grant monies will be paid upon completion of construction of new housing and the issuing of an Occupation Certificate.

Housing Grant Dashboard

Once the program opens, Council will create a Housing Grant Dashboard on its website showing the total pool of money that is available, how many applications have been received, how many have been accepted and the amount that remains available.

Any DA, CDC or a Section 68 Application that has already been lodged through the Planning Portal, but not determined before 1 July, will be eligible to apply for a grant. Those that have been determined will not be considered.

The grants are funded by the Federal Governments Building Better Regional Cities program.

Artist and teacher Mim OGrady read a statement on behalf of Bundjalung man Ashley Moran, who grew up on Cabbage Tree Island and has worked for National Parks for many years. Mr Moran mentioned some of the horrific incidents of post-contact history in and around Ballina, including the massacres.

Why a Germ Expert Is Begging You To Remove the Foil or Plastic Seal Under the Lid of Your Containers After Opening "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

If you frequent Reddit or engage in household debates on food storage, youve likely encountered the controversy surrounding foil or plastic seals on food products like yogurt and sour cream. Should these seals be removed or retained for additional coverage after opening? One couple debated this question for an impressive ten years before a directive from the very product in question solved their quandary. The husband found the unexpected resolution under the contentious disposable seal, which was imprinted with a manufacturers instruction: To prolong freshness, completely remove and discard this foil seal.

This straightforward message from the product manufacturer may solve the debate, but it still leaves us wondering about the original purpose of the seals. Moreover, how can leaving these seals on an opened container compromise the freshness of its contents? In pursuit of these answers, we consulted two renowned germ experts.

Understanding the Purpose of Foil or Plastic Seals on Food Containers

According to Jason Tetro, a respected microbiologist and author of the book The Germ Files, there are two primary reasons for the existence of these seals. Firstly, it helps to increase shelf lifethe container is usually flushed with nitrogen before sealing, which reduces the amount of oxygen inside, he explains. Nitrogen flushing is a common technique used by food manufacturers to prolong the shelf-life of their products. The reduction of oxygen inside the container is intended to suppress the growth of aerobic bacteria and fungi, which can cause food to spoil.

Secondly, these seals serve as a protective barrier for the containers contents. It helps to prevent the introduction of chemicals and microbes that could spoil the products and/or cause illnesses, states Tetro.

Adding further clarity to this matter, microbial ecologist Jack A. Gilbert, Ph.D., a professor at the University of California San Diego, elaborates on the importance of the seal. He describes it as a safety and quality mechanism. It works by creating a barrier between the product and the external environment while also providing assurance to consumers that the product has not been tampered with prior to purchase.

Deforestation: Onuesoke  Calls For Establishment Of  Forestry And Conservation Commission In Delta "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

ONUESOKE 13

LAGOS JUNE 25TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain and former  gubernatorial aspirant, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has appealed to Delta State Government to set up Forestry and Conservation Commission to tackle deforestation, forest degradation and develop the forest assets.

Onuesoke who decried the effects the  loss and degradation of forest  is having on the people pointed out that the Commission if inaugurated  will reverse the trend, harness the forest wildlife resources to promote conservation of the ecosystem and take charge of the ungoverned spaces in the forest.

The PDP Chieftain who made the call when some loyalists paid him a visit in his office at Oto-Udu in Udu local government area of Delta State  expressed worries over the devastating impacts of poachers, illegal logging activities and arsonists, especially herdsmen, who allegedly set fire in the forest to allow for fresh pasturing grasses.

According to him, Deforestation and forest degradation is happening at an alarming rate, resulting in many wildlife habitats being destroyed, farmlands opened to flooding, loss of biodiversity, greenhouse gases accumulation and loss of forest ecosystem, among others. Delta State  is a low-lying coastal state that is vulnerable to climate change. The trees in the forest are very important for the sequestration of carbon, so we need to conserve the forest.

Through afforestation, there would be more plants or trees to help absorb carbon dioxide and reduce its content in the air or in the atmosphere. As carbon dioxide is being reduced through the help of trees, then the problems of climate change and global warming will be answered, even in the smallest way. More than the trees, the soil that is being developed as a forest also absorbs the CO2 from the atmosphere three times more than the trees.

The soil used for the afforestation also gets to be healthy again, and helps in the natural water filtration system. Moreover, afforestation also helps the environment by providing shade for people, habitat for wildlife, and providing food for both human and herbivores.

He argued that  it is sad  that a state like Delta that is blessed with natural forest  to allow the extinction of peculiar animals and giants African trees enriched with interlocking canopies from the forests, which are pot...

Rights Groups Denounce Spain and Moroccos Lack of Justice as Melilla Tragedy Anniversary Nears

By JENNIFER O'MAHONY

FILE - Migrants run on Spanish soil after crossing the fences separating the Spanish enclave of Melilla from Morocco in Melilla, Spain, on June 24, 2022. (AP Photo/Javier Bernardo)

MADRID (AP) Rights groups on Friday denounced a lack of justice and transparency over the deaths of at least 37 migrants last year during a mass attempt to cross the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave city of Melilla.

Ahead of the tragedys first anniversary on Saturday, Amnesty International said the Spanish and Moroccan authorities were preventing attempts to find the truth of what happened when up to 2,000 African migrants tried to climb a border wall and dozens were crushed, beaten and denied medical attention by security forces at the Barrio Chino border crossing.

The independent Spanish Commission for Refugees, also known by its Spanish acronym CEAR, ordered authorities to clarify what happened that day for truth, justice and reparations, and demanded the launch of an independent investigation after prosecutors shelved the only state probe into the deaths in December.

This leaves the door wide open for such a tragedy to happen again, endangering the lives of thousands of people seeking refuge, said Estrella Galn, CEARs general director.

Amnesty noted that the families of 76 people who remain missing after the tragedy were still waiting for answers, and that Spain and Morocco both had failed to provide a full list of victims names, or any footage of the tragedy.

Bodies are still lying in a morgue and in graves and efforts to identify the dead and inform their relatives have been blocked, said Amnesty International Secretary General Agns Callamard.

Spains interior ministry has repeatedly denied that any deaths occurred on...

RFK Jr.: Bannon Chaos Candidate Born on Third Base and Now Playing Left Field "IndyWatch Feed National"

A recent sequence of events perfectly encapsulates the bizarre, dangerous collisions between anti-science and politics that have become all too frequent in the Trumpocene, and from which Robert F. Kennedy Jr.s controversial presidential run has emerged.

The political scion and notorious anti-vaxxer recently appeared on the conspiracy-friendly Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) podcast to hype his long-shot Democratic presidential candidacy, said to have been encouraged by international anti-democracy activist Steve Bannon

Vaccine scientist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Peter Hotez who has a new book coming out in September titled The Deadly Rise of Anti-Science tweeted a Vice article by Anna Merlan critical of the Rogan episode and of Spotify for continuing to platform vaccine disinformation.

This prompted Rogan to start an online bullying campaign against the vaccine scientist offering $100,000 to the charity of Hotezs choice to debate Kennedy on his podcast, and thereby raise the platform of their debunked conspiracy theories and refused to take no as an answer. Rogans stunt was amplified by Twitter owner Elon Musk (who had previously used the platform to call for Dr. Anthony Faucis ...
