All up and down the NSW coastal zone local residents are involved in conversations like this and, as in this case, local government staff are well aware of what is happening.

Olive Cotton Award announced for 2023 Local News Echonetdaily

Ferne Millen No Labels Required 2023 C-type print. Acquired as the Directors Choice of the 2023 Olive Cotton Award.

Winners of the 2023 Olive Cotton Award were announced recently with Gerwyn Davies portrait Replica winning the $20,000 overall prize.

The ceremony was attended by many of this years finalists who travelled from across the country to join in the celebrations.

Davies Replica was selected as the winning portrait from a field of 72 finalists, including emerging and established photographers from around Australia. Davies is the 12th artist to win the Award, which was first presented in 2005.

The announcements were made in an official opening and presentation ceremony at Tweed Regional Gallery, Murwillumbah on Saturday 15 July. The event was also live-streamed for those who could not attend.

The Award was judged by artist, curator and critic Dr Daniel Mudie Cunningham. Dr Mudie Cunningham visited the Gallery on Friday 14 July to view all works installed before making his final decision.

Dr Mudie Cunningham said hiding is not something we associate with portraiture. A conventional portrait requires a subjects presence and disclosure to connect with the world.

New school for controversial site in Lennox Local News Echonetdaily

Super Lot 5, corner of Snapper and Montwood Drives, Lennox Head. Photo David Lowe.

Clarence Property, the developer of Lennox Heads Epiq estate, has announced the sale of Super Lot 5, on the corner of Montwood and Snapper Drive, to the NSW Department of Education.

The 4.2ha site will now become the site of the new Lennox Head Primary School, having previously been mooted by the developer as the location of a retirement facility and then a medium-density integrated housing development of over 100 dwellings.

Having run into problems with Ballina Shire Council advancing that idea, Clarence Property appealed to the NSW Department of Planning to change the planned use of the land, but that has now been set aside by the new announcement.

Ballina Cr Kiri Dicker, a critic of the housing development plan, has enthusiastically welcomed the latest news, describing it as an enormous win for the community and a perfect site for the Lennox Head Public School.

On social media, Cr Dicker said, I still cant stop smiling at the news that our new school will be located right in the heart of the Epiq Estate, which is home to so many young families.

Climate Change State of Play in 2023: as seen from Yamba, Australia and the rest of the world North Coast Voices

Yamba (pop. est. 6,388) at the mouth of the Clarence River estuary on the NSW far north coast, has an official weather station ID: 058012 which has been recording observations since May 1877 from a headline on the northside of the town.

What this relatively long history, of measuring air temperature, humidity levels, wind direction & velocity along with rainfall, is currently indicating is that from January to June 2023 monthly temperatures have been hotter than the 145 year averages.

While over the same period rainfall is so far below monthly averages that by June - the first month of Winter - rainfall was est. 125-127mm below the 145 year average for that month and occurred across only 7 of the 30 June days.

Yamba, like much of the Clarence Valley and 23.3% of the North Coast has been classified as Drought Affected on the NSW DPI Combined Drought Indicator (CDI).

BSA Visual Arts Foundation Course students Exhibition Tuesdays Byron Bay Blog

Tuesdays

An exhibition of work from Term 2 by Byron School of Art first year students working with Michelle Dawson.

The joy of a class can be the communal support of the group and the vortex that is created by everyone being engaged. Sometimes you can feel it swirling above the class. It is there to call on.

This was a big term. We looked at colour theory, complementary colours, composition, colour mixing, and a variety painting techniques.

Each week there was new information and explorations of new territories that could be both confronting and challenging.

We had nine Tuesdays and nine challenges that 16 students met wholeheartedly.

Here is a celebration of that work.

Exhibition runs: Wednesday 12 July Thursday 27 July
Opening hours: Monday Friday, 10am 3pm
BSA Project Space: 112 Dalley Street, Mullumbimby, NSW 2482
