The Voice to Parliament is not about race, its about equity. Its not racially divisive, but it is divisive, and justifiably so. And although the referendum singles out Indigenous Australians, it is not predicated on race a lawyerly point to be examined further, writes DJ Wexler.

Division is not inherently a bad thing. We divide schools into different year levels. Sports clubs are assorted into separate mens and womens streams and are further splintered into leagues of skill and ability. By extension, are womens domestic abuse hotlines sexist? Is the disability support pension ableist? No. They are government programs addressing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable members of society. Unique problems are treated uniquely. The division the Voice makes is analogical but in a significantly, assiduously constructed, and expanded fashion.

It begs the question, what do we mean by Indigenous Australian if it is not based on race? And how can we justify their unique treatment?

Firstly, we need reminding that the Voice has been worked on and picked over by constitutional lawyers, politicians, and Indigenous representatives from across the country since 2015. And more recently, the Joint Select Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice Referendum addressed questions opponents of the Voice frequently and disingenuously exploit to sow seeds of uncertainty in an impressionable public.

During the committee hearing, Professor Anne Twomey points out a lawyerly, but clear, distinction. The referendum does not refer to Aboriginal and Indigenous Australians by race, it refers to them by reference to their being Australias first peoples, which is made clear at the start of the referendum question: A Proposed Law to recognise the First Peoples of Australia, and in the proposed law itself: In recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia.

Will a Voice to parliament for Australias Indigenous peoples really come from, and represent, the nations most marginalised? Dr Monica Seini weighs in.

We, non-Indigenous Australians, need to turn the lens on ourselves in the debate on the upcoming Referendum on Constitutional recognition of an Indigenous Australian Voice. Will the Referendum prompt us to acknowledge the history of our present, and truly open our ears to an Indigenous voice, whatever that may look like?

I am by no means advising people to vote no, nor am I against a change to the Constitution. I am offering caution.

It will not be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who decide the outcome of the referendum.

Almost 97% of people in Australia are non-Indigenous; hence, those of voting age within this majority will determine the outcome. A year ago, on 30 July 2022, our newly elected Prime Minister Albanese spoke at the Garma Festival on Yolngu Country. The PM encouraged people to vote with their heart and vote Yes.

If the Yes vote is successful, we so-called woke folk will be ecstatic. We will pat ourselves on the back for gifting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a Voice regarding their own affairs, on their own Country. Land that has never been ceded. What then?

It will not be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who decide how the Voice will be enacted if the Referendum is successful.

It is the Parliament that will decide how the Voice will look, and sound. According to our Prime Minister: The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws with respect to the composition, functions, powers and procedures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Writing the Voice into the Constitution means a willingness to listen wont depend on who is in government or who is Prime Minister.

I have been creating a Mandalas for many years and began by creating colouring pages with affirmations for relaxation for women in domestic violence shelters. Many of those Mandala designs then went on to become my first book The Big Girls Little Colouring Book.

As the ancient Greeks reminded us, bone cold definitions as starting points are essential in any discussion.  One current discussion, insignificant to posterity but amusing for advertisers and the presently bored, is the ludicrous reactions to a plastic doll rendered into celluloid form.  And as a doll, it can be no other.  Mattels Barbie has become, courtesy of Greta Gerwig, a talking point so silly it deserves to be treated trivially.  But money, advertising, and Mattel, wont allow that.

Commentators, whatever their ilk, cannot help themselves.  Jourdain Searles, evidently struggling to earn a crust or two, asks two banal questions.  This first: In a cinematic landscape drowning in IP, would a live-action film about the Barbie doll, Mattels flagship toy, be held up as proof of the continued commodification of cinema as an artform?  The second is not much of an improvement: And in a more progressive cultural landscape, could a woman-directed film about Barbie dolls be feminist?  Not necessarily.

The New York Times does not disappoint in its silliness. Can a doll with an ingratiating smile, impossible curves and boobs ready for liftoff be a feminist icon?  No, it cannot, but stating something so embarrassingly asinine is very much in character with this field.

From the conservative, domestic, home stove huggers, this is distinctly not on.  Ben Shapiro of the Daily Wire lamented the unironic use of the word patriarchy more than 10 times.  Toby Young in The Spectator moaned that, The film is a gender studies seminar disguised as a summer blockbuster,.  Kyle Smith, formerly a National Review critic, echoed the grievance in the Wall Street Journal.  As bubbly as the film appears, its script is like a grumpier-than-average womens studies seminar.

Young goes a bit deeper in opining that Barbie is an act of self-flagellation a way of doing penance for a sin of being associated with a brand that was insufficiently woke in the past.  Dont be too white; dont be too thin.  This paean to female empowerment is a plea for forgiveness from the titans who run Mattel, but I suspect it will be another case of Go woke, go broke.

The first game of the Bledisloe Cup is on tonight at 7pm AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time). The Bledisloe Cup is an annual rugby union test competition between Australia and New Zealand. It normally involves three matches. This year, because of the rugby world cup starting in September, there are two matches. New Zealand currently holds the cup. Australia would have to win the two games to win the trophy back. The second match is next Saturday in Dunedin in New Zealands deep south. To win these two games would be very difficult, if not impossible for the out-of-form Wallabies.

The All Blacks are running red-hot in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France.

Im going there in October. I have tickets to the All Blacks two possible quarter finals, the semis and finals. Six games in total over consecutive weekends. All at Stade de France in Paris.

April 11 (Reuters) - An Israeli firm's hacking tools have been used against journalists, opposition figures and advocacy organizations across at least 10 countries - including people in North America and Europe - according to new research published Tuesday by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and the internet watchdog Citizen Lab.

Citizen Lab said in its report that it had been able to identify a handful of civil society victims whose iPhones had been hacked using surveillance software developed by the Israeli company, QuaDream Ltd - a lower-profile competitor to the Israeli spyware company NSO Group, which has been blacklisted by the U.S. government over allegations of abuse.

In this interview, investigative journalist and fishing industry insider Paul Molyneaux discusses aquaculture and the dangers of farmed fish, which are also the topics of his book "Swimming in Circles: Aquaculture and the End of Wild Oceans."

From my perspective, the two most dangerous foods served in most restaurants are factory farmed chicken, which is responsible for a majority of foodborne illnesses, and farmed fish, especially farmed salmon, which is among the most toxic foods on the planet.

Salmon Farming in Cobscook Bay

At the age of 17, Molyneaux left home and got a job in commercial fishing, which led to work in aquaculture in the late '70s.

"I always had an interest in aquaculture, although I primarily was a commercial fisherman. In the late '80s, I ran a fish processing plant for the Passamaquoddy tribe in Eastport, Maine, on Cobscook Bay. There was a sudden push to do salmon farming in the bay.

The way the promoters at the time, a company called Ocean Products sold it to us was [by] saying, 'You can become farmers of the sea. You can start giving back to the ocean.' We bought it hook, line and sinker Last summer, there were about six of us standing on the dock in Eastport, saying, 'Geez, we thought this was going to be great.'"

As fisheries had dwindled, they believed aquafarming would be the answer to keeping the fishing industry alive. Alas, the industry was rapidly consolidated into the hands of just a few players. "Now, it's in the hands of one," Molyneaux says.

What's worse, it didn't take long before the environmental downsides of aquaculture became readily apparent as well. In the late 1990s, infectious salmon anemia virus spread like wildfire among the salmon pens in Cobscook Bay, wiping out the fishery as 2 million fish had to be discarded overnight.

"That set the industry back. Now, it's owned by one company Cooke Aquaculture and pretty much everything is automated. They have a tremendous sea lice problem.

They're pouring tons of SLICE into those pens, and they're coming up with new systems now because they're finding the sea lice medication is now in the mollusks, like the scallops that are also harvested from the bay. Cooke has been fined twice in the last five years for using an illegal chemical, cypermethrin, to fight sea lice."

Intestinal interventions on the gut microbiome by fecal transplantations to reconstitute the gut-immunity homeostasis serve as a novel therapeutic option for SLE patients. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), which is usually used in intestinal diseases, has been firstly demonstrated to be safe and efficient in recovering gut microbiota structure of SLE patients and reducing lupus activity in our recent clinical trial, which is the first trial testing FMT therapy in SLE treatment. In this paper, we reviewed the results of the single-arm clinical trial and made recommendations on FMT practice in SLE treatment including therapeutic indications, screening items and dosage regimen, trying to provide references for future study and clinical practice. Why name a baby X A-12, something that is going to result in the child being tormented by their peers and likely require years of therapy as an adult? This whole business of parents trying to give their children weird names to make some ideological point seems to be sheer vanity, seeing the child as a vehicle for their own obsessions and ignoring their needs. I am really glad that my parents gave me an utterly common name. As least it is common in Sri Lanka though, because it is simple enough, it is only a little exotic now that I am in the US.

But Musk has big plans for the company that he now has renamed X, seeing it as the precursor to an everything app, whatever the hell that is.

X, Musk promises, will be the everything app. X is the Technocrats dream deferred, a way to engineer society, the economy, and politics. Extreme capitalismMuskismas the answer to existential risk. With any luck, it will be a disaster.

I hope so too.

Eight major pro-Israel Jewish organisations from seven different countries have united to create a new task force to defend Israel under the guides of combatting anti-Semitism. The groups in the Task Force Against Anti-Semitism have all embraced the controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism and placed defending Israel from criticism at the centre of their work.

Calling themselves J7, the anti-Palestinian taskforce comprises prominent Jewish organisations from the US, the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Argentina and Australia: the Anti-Defamation League (ADL); the Conference of Presidents of American Jewish Organisations; the Board of Deputies of British Jews; Conseil Reprsentatif des Institutions Juives de France (CRIF); the Central Council of Jews in Germany; the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA); Delegacin de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas (DAIA); and the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ).

Anti-Semitism is rising around the world, especially in countries where there are large Jewish populations. We needed to meet these challenges through coordinated action, ADL head Jonathan Greenblatt told Haaretz. This new coalition of major organisations representing seven large Jewish Diaspora communities in liberal democracies will provide a formal framework for coordination, consultation and formulating global responses to anti-Semitic threats against the Jewish people.

Greenblatt is one of the key proponents of the idea that anti-Zionism and legitimate criticism of the state of Israel equate to anti-Semitism. He is spearheading the initiative. The idea for the J7 came out of conversations I had with partners in France over our shared challenges and concerns. When we reached out to these seven communities, there was instant enthusiasm about the importance of the seven of us consulting, and what we might achieve working together.

Nearly 100 pilot whales became stranded on Cheynes Beach in Western Australia on Tuesday. Most of the pod, 52 whales, died overnight, and the rest have been euthanized, according to officials, as rescue efforts over two days have failed.

The pilot whales were first seen swimming in the area on Tuesday morning, but they covered much of Cheynes Beach by late afternoon, The Associated Press reported. Volunteers worked to rescue the surviving beached whales on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

What were seeing is utterly heartbreaking and distressing, Reece Whitby, environment minister for Western Australia, said. Its just a terrible, terrible tragedy to see these dead pilot whales on the beach.

Hundreds of volunteers along with Perth Zoo veterinarians and experts in marine fauna worked to move the whales back into the water and were able to do so, but only temporarily, NPR reported. The whales became stranded again on the beach, and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions announced plans to euthanize the remaining whales.

DBCA officers and veterinarians have completed assessing the whales that re-stranded on Cheynes Beach this afternoon. Sadly, the decision had to be made to euthanise the remaining whales to avoid prolonging their suffering, the department announced on Facebook. It was a difficult decision for all involved however the welfare of the whales had to take precedence. We thank everyone who assisted with the attempt to save the whales over the last two days.

According to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation, long-finned pilot whales are extremely social animals and are actually part of the dolphin family. Individuals bond closely to others in their pod and will stay together, even if it is dangerous to do so, the organization explained. Like the war that necessitated it, Russias decision not to renew the United Nations and Turkish-brokered grain deal is bad for the world but not wholly unprovoked.

The deal allowed Ukraine safe passage for its grain laden ships through the mined and blockaded Black Sea ports so it could continue to export its agriculture to the world.

On July 17, Russia announced its decision not to renew the deal.

It has repeatedly been reported that Russias decision is retaliation for Ukraines recent sabotage of the Kerch Strait bridge that links Crimea to the Russian mainland. But President Vladimir Putin had announced the distinct possibility of suspending the agreement prior to the attack on the bridge.

During a July 13 question period, in a response to a journalist, Putin said, prior to the attack on the bridge, We can suspend our participation in this deal.

Putin gave two reasons for suspending the deal after having extended this so-called deal many times. The first is that, though it was Russia that suspended the deal, it was the West that broke it. As for the conditions under which we agreed to ensure the safe export of Ukrainian grain, yes, there were clauses in this agreement with the United Nations, according to which Russian interests had to be taken into account as well, Putin said. Not a single clause related to what is in the interests of the Russian Federation has been fulfilled.

Announcing the decision not to renew the deal four days later, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov repeated that charge; Unfortunately, the part of the Black Sea agreement that concerns Russia has not yet been fulfilled. As a result, it has been terminated. However, he added that As soon as the Russian part [of the deal] is fulfilled, the Russian side will immediately return to the implementation of this deal. Putin made a similar pledge in his answer to the journalist. One option, he said, is not first the extension and then the honouring of promises, but first the honouring of promises and then our participation. What do I mean? We can suspend our participation in this deal, and if everybody once again says that all the promises made to us will be fulfilled, let them fulfil themand we will immediately join this deal. Again.
